If any of you remember, i am getting back into rc after about10 years. I must say this is a impresive kit. But i have some questions, actually as i put it together if you don't mind i will be asking questions as i need answers. My first question is, how much differential oil are you supposed to put in the case?? I put the front and rear together (it was a bitch!!!) and filled up to about where the picture showed me. But as i put the last screws in some of the oil leaked out the screw holes. I did not fill it up all the way but covered up the pins like in the pic. Is this right????

poop, i just got my front and rear diff's mixed up. Is there a way to tell the difference in the two, without taking them back apart and redoing the oil?

Diff oil should be filled to the level of the pins holding the smaller "Star" gears in the diffs, not above. too much and it can cause damage during running. The gears rotate and create "Air" bubbles which expands the oil in the case, therefore use too much and it can cause damage.

You fill them 3/4 of the way full, you'll figure it over time. Don't worry about overfilling, it will just fling out. It won't hurt a thing.
To tell them apart, turn the diffs by hand and see which is easier to turn. That will be the one with the lighter weight oil, for the rear.

Scrogg, you ever overfilled a diff and dealt with the results ?? i have, so i know !! it ain't none too pretty and the clean up aint too nice either. I also blew out my centre diff through "Over filling" aswell. hence the "fill to the level of the pins holding the smaller "Star" gears" advice.

it was extreamly hard to tell if it was over the pins. It was not full at all. But after i put the screws in a little leaked out. But that could be because it was such a bitch to get the screws in. i had to handle it pretty hard.

Just lost a o-ring. have to stop the center diff untill i get some more at 12:00

guess i will put together front and rear gear cases.

Of course I have, it just leaks out the seals. Improper shimming/assembly/poor gear quality are what kills differentials. Yes it is a bit messy to clean up but at least the ring and pinion get extra lube.:hehe:
I've been building diffs in 1/8 scale cars for maybe 6 years or so now. Never broke a diff from too much fluid.

It is possible, especially with the heavier diff oils. Sorry if i came across as arrogant, not intended. just my experience has made me a little careful.

4 years of diff building, and one blown diff through overfilling and i'm still kinda worried when i build my diffs about over filling. :hehe:

just put my differential inside the housing, put the drive shaft in. The main gear (that is outside the diff box that connect to the drive shaft) is slightly rubbing the housing on one side. It is barely noticable but you can tell nonetheless. Should i file it down?? Or did i put it together wrong?

they gave a extra shim for play inside the gear case, i took it out and that solved it (i think). It didn't have any extra play anyway, which is what is was for.
