I want to know what are the best upgrades for the Savage X 4.6? Mine is fresh out of the box, and what to do next? I am not looking to change the engine or convert it to a XL, just more performance. Any suggestions??

Where is a good online place to purchase? Are there different types or brands?

Towerhobbies.com, ebay, and a few other sites are great places to get it. I'd recommend the kit, since you already have a case and bearings.

Also, if you have any intentions, even remotely, of installing the reverse module, you might as well do both at the same time (since both require removing the transmission case completely from the chassis).

i'm not exactly sure what comes stock in the 4.6, but if it still uses normal batteries for the recvr you should consider getting a good 6v hump pack. aside from that your shoud consider getting new steering servo with atleast 130 oz of torque. most people use either the hitch 645 or JR 650 since they are both contain metal gears. both items can be purchased for under 100 bucks and should give your performance enhancements.

I agree with Savagefan for the first up-grades. The 3-speed really only adds 2 mph on top end, it does add a little more acceleration too. It is a pain to adjust 2nd gear shifts as well. Not hard to do but after 3 or 4 times of pulling it to get the shift point right it gets old.
Offset wheels and some new tires suioted to your driving conditions. The offset wheels add a ton of stability to the truck.
The Savage really does not need anything else beyond that.

Okay, Scrogg, I need that exact info. I had a thread awhile ago about adjusting the one up front. There's no access to it.
Is the one under the rubber cover the shift from 2nd to 3rd?
I noticed during assembly that there would be no way of adjusting the other one without removing and opening the trans.
Is that the situation? I was hoping that the adjustment under the cap would effect the overall shaft speed so that it would change both points, either earlier or later.

Yep, you have to remove the 3-speed cluster from the tranny case. Then you have to pull one of the gearsets, i think 3rd gear... Then you can access the 2nd gear adjustment screw. It takes about 10-15 minutes. The one under the cap is for 3rd gear.

That's what I was afraid of. Even on a 2 speed, with instant access to the grub screw, it often takes 2 or 3 tries to get it exactly where you want it in the power curve.

Thanks for the info, Scrogg.

Scrogg confirmed it; if you have the 3 speed, you definitely want the X center trans case. It fits the old 21/25 style TVPs with zero mods, and makes getting at the gear cluster a breeze.

Maybe I dont have to upgrade anything yet, I think I will upgrade as I break stuff. This thing is AWESOME!!!! A bit different than my old T-Maxx 1.5 Now I know why it comes with a roll cage for the engine......I kept on checking the temp as I was breaking it in, and after the 4th tank I kept on leaning it out. I still see smoke coming out of the exhaust. The hottest I got it was 240. Maybe I should richen it up a bit? What an awesome Mothers day.....my wife is not too pleased, but what a way to spend our stimulus check lol.

I'm glad you spent it on something the 2 of you can treasure for a long time, rather than wasting it on frilly stuff that you'll soon get tired of wearing.
You da man!

I have the 4.6 X.
Do you mean that there's a trans case that would give me access to both adjustments from the outside?

Nope, unfortunately. With the X case, you have to take the handle off, then two screws on the top of the case. Lift the top of the case off (if you have to change the spur, now's the time), and lift the cluster out. Take the gear that is rearward off the cluster, and you have access to the 2nd gear clutch. It's still a little bit of work, but it's even worse with the stock 21/25 case (you have to tear the truck completely down to adjust the 2nd gear shift point).

Now, as for accessing it from the outside.... I think that would require a slight re-design, which I think HPI was trying to do, so the middle hole under the rubber plug can be used.

I have the X RTR, and that has the 3 holes with the rubber cap, and I have the 3 speed assembled tranny on the way, that has two holes... what did they cover there? I only see use for the last hole anyway. shame about the 1st to 2nd gear change... thats a pain.

Yeah, but once you set the trans, it doesn't have to really be adjusted, unless you change tires or bell/spur ratio.

I would highly recommend you transplant everything from the assembled case to the X case.

The one that comes with the built kit is the 21/25 case, which is a one-piece assembly. The old style case requires a complete teardown to adjust the 2nd gear shift point.

that sucks balls. I didn't know that HB. So it's pretty easy to swap over yeah? is there a tutorial? From what i've seen in the GB of the X it's bascially the gear assembly and two bearings... can't be all that hard.
