The only requirement is, post pics in your favorite RC forum.

I know Arrma has a lot of interchangeable parts, I would imagine Traxxas does too, just not sure which ones. Have fun creating!

You are correct. A lot of the Slash 2wd, Rustler, and Bandit stuff is interchangeable. I think some of the Stampede stuff is as well? I only know this from building the drag Stang and researching the Bandit Pinto car we are gonna build. I have also seen someone putting Jato arms on another Traxxas with minimal modification needed. Where there is a will, there is a way.
