A guy I use to detail for, his daughter was on judge Joe Mathis. It was a legitimate case but they paid her $2500 to have it on tv and would pay the restitution if she lost.. Her story was she went on spring break with a couple of her girl friends and they ended up getting kicked out of a hotel that she already paid for in full and the two other girls didnt pay there halves. (and I guess it was the two other girls faults for getting kicked out).. She ended up winning.

That is how these shows work. The plaintiff and the defendant both sign contracts agreeing to binding arbitration to be performed by the mock court. They are also compensated for appearing on the show.
