This is the forth chance I've gotten to run my Hyper PBS, this evening after work, the first 2 times,(first run and breaking in) the weather sucked, very cold on first start up, and still cold the next day, and very, very humid and cold the third chance over a time span of a few weeks now.
But , this evening, it was about 55-60 degrees out and dry, and I couldn't believe it, but it started first pull! I ran it at high idle trim for a minute or two watching the temp, and then started running her hard when I saw about 210 degrees, and checked temp after about a quarter tank, and saw 287 degrees, so I richened her up a bit, and she flamed out from idle to full throttle pull, leaned her a touch, and plenty of smoke and good throttle response and showed 230 degrees, leaned her just a tiny bit more and ran for a minute or so, got a temp reading of 254 and amazing performance, stable idle, and loads of throttle response. I shut her off, let her cool, and then she fired first pull again :) , and ran flawlessly!! Still consistent 254-255 temp readings. :)
I could feel the adrenaline running though me!
This is one amazing hobby to say the least!.

Sure...rub it in why don't ya!

what bro? the temps? hell I'm a snow fanatic,,,I saw some snow accumulate here about 6 years ago,,almost 4 inches, but , now that i think about it, I don't want snow anymore ,lol,,I want time to run my baby! I just hope that these temps aren't an indication of the summer to come,,that would put us at about 130 degrees during the day,,,hmm,,how shall I build a liquid cooling system for a nitro buggy?,,I'll study on that! lol

Congrats on having a great day with your buggy, and don't mind Monkey Wrench....it's that time of the month LOL

Sounds like ya gettin the hang of it! Congrats man! The first good tune is something youll always remember. Now ya can really enjoy the hobby!

Jeep, one thing you did nto mention, after running those temps you put the piston at BDC while you let it cool, right?!

Great temps. Once you lock on a generally good tune, little adjustments are the most you will need, and mostly to the HSN. By listening, using a temp gun, and also which end of the throttle your engine response is bad in, you can really narrow down what needs to be done to get it tuned that much better. Two easiest field tips are the steady and medium thick smoke trail, and the pinch test.

Revo,
I was a firm believer in the piston to BDC about 2 weeks before my buggy ever arrived :)
I had read enough about these engines and the pinch/taper of the piston/cylinder that I tattoed it into my mind!. plus it made perfect sense as it also closes off the intake port at the carb inlet.

And on the pinch test, the last time I shut it down, it ran about 2-3 secs then increased rpm a decent amount and died about 1-1.5 secs later.

Thanks Bro, I'm as tickled as I can be with this lil rig. I've only had very, very minor problems, nothing really to speak of though. I just hate that I didn't get started in this earlier! It's truely a blast. I havn't seen a hyper .21 8 port run yet, but I know this mach .28 is an absolute beast!

Jeep

Jeep, you are missing something, the Hyper .21 8 port SCREAMS!! It is not a top of then line engine by any means, and it is low quality IMO, but it sure has a great deal of power. I just removed my pullstart and replaced the backplate, and whoah, the thing ran like a dream. Unforntunely it ran so hard that I chipped a nice chunk out of a front outdrive and lost a dogbone, but all that is on order, and I am going to change out the diff lube. If you haven't done that already, I strongly advise it, coz my center spider diff was almost bone dry when I cracked the case..... Use silicone oil instead of grease.

I planned on making sure the diffs were filled as they should be and read alot on it, but , in the haste of ordering everything I would need and then some when I ordered my buggy, instead of ordering 1k, 3k and 5k diff lubes,(as I've read those are the preferred viscosities),, I accidently ordered 10k,30k, and 50k,, hell,,I dunno, I may as well run those as I'm not racing "yet",lol.

Also, I've read great things about the Hyper 21 8 port and was expecting one, and a bit disappointed when my kit showed with the Hobao mach engine.,,but this Mach .28 6-port is an absolute beast it is AMAZING to say the least. :)

Hyper .21 8 port is pickier to tune and makes all it's power on the upper end. That's why so many people end up coughing up another 60.00 for the JP 1 pipe for them. Your .28 is a more usable engine all around.

Cool to know Revo, I just purchased the ofna 063 header/exhaust kit more because of the "coupler" being eliminated on the stock exhaust system and with the understanding that it would perform better as well.
My stock manifold kept trying to push out of the coupler.
But , as far as the engine is concerned, It seems to perform flawlessly and very strong , it reaches "balls to the wall" speed with zero hesitation as if it is trying to rip the tires off of the wheels, and after sitting for a week, it fired up with 1 pull and idled perfectly. What more could I ask for??,,lol

Jeep

That's a good pipe for it, it will fatten up the low and mid range, a lot like the JP 1.

Frankly, Jeep, I've about had enough of you having "perfect" outings with your rig! I mean, do you really enjoy rubbing it in?

Anyone else feel the same way, just tired of hearing Jeep experience "flawless" performance from his rig?

KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!! That's too cool for school, man! Run that thing till the tires melt!

I formally apologize for everything going well with my first nitro rc.

NOT!!!

Bro, I put a load of time into trying to understanding these nitro cars/buggies/mts, reading everything I could and sorting the BS out from the truth.

That's how I ended up here at RCNT!, It seemed to be the place of ALOT of congruent thinking, and almost no B.S. (except where it was intended :) )

Anyway, it's thanks to you folks and your excellent advice that my first nitro experience in RC's has been no less than amazing!

Also, by the way, it hasn't ALL been flawless, I still see pink spots from the where the "first run attempt blisters" were.
It wouldn't hit a lick at first (it was about 40 degrees outside)
I pulled the glow plug and put my glow heater on it (had a new energizer d-cell) and it glowed but, not what I figured to be "enough".
So, I went to Walmart looking for D-cell nicads(I know they can push more current), but ended up buying a 4 pack of Duracells, and when i got home I drilled a hole in the bottom of the glow heater and fed 2 wires through it, then soldered in parallel 1 external duracell to the internal duracell, and attached it with electrical tape after I capped the internal bat. And I preheated the engine with a hairdryer,,
then, the glowplug had sufficient heat and temp to fire it off. :)

But, it has been fairly flawless since then, still using the same paralleled duracells to fire her off :)

 Modding things already huh? You were born for this hobby Jeep. LOL

This is the battery/glow ignitor setup I use. Ran me $20 2 years ago and I'm still using the same battery. Heres a linky for you
660battery.webp

Also, on cold days, its easier to start the engine if you warm it up first. Hair dryer, heat gun, etc...
