Brave to move a distance? I am moving to Panama in 5 short years only to return once, maybe twice a year to the land of the PX and that's normal for me. Aside from being called "howlie," what do you need to be brave about to move to Hawaii?

pirata - at least i didnt serve on a target, uh, i mean surface ship.

zoomer - my rate was CTi2(ss/dv) : I was a cryptologist and a linguist, translated languages copied by classified spy equipment, on board submarines, i was also a navy diver. If you are seriously thinking about joining, go to your recruiter and take the ASVAB and DLAB, see how u do - I think that everyone should join the service, its a great experience.

that is 100% correct - u get a gold star!

the reason i told him to take it - is that if he can become a CTi - he will love it, it has to be the greatest enlisted job available. Not only did i get promoted wicked fast, but i am always on a different boat, spend only about 120 days a year at sea, and get cola pay, sea pay, haz duty pay, sub pay, immenent danger pay, and hostile fire pay. i was making more a month as an E-5 than alot of LT JG's.

I guess I have been in the Army too long if I can figure out acronyms without ever seeing or hearing them before... What language did you have as an identifier? Hawaiian? I have Spanish as an identifier however as of March they are no longer giving extra pay for a language identifier, at least not with Spanish.

One of my biggest regrets was not enlisting. Scored 97% on the ASVAB when I was 18. Navy and Marines recruiters were up my ass but in the end I never signed on the dotted line.

If you are seriously thinking about joining, make sure your recruiter isnt full of poop. Couple friends of mine scored great on the ASVAB, were told by everyone what jobs were available and were almost Promised certain jobs after basic. When the time came for CIT (I think thats whats its called) they were told what they wanted was no longer avail. One ended up in the motor pool and the other as a cook. But maybe thats just the Marines.

I am fluent in Japanese, Russian, and Turkish. I took Japanese in College, The Navy taught me Russian and Turkish.

But as long as you know that going in and get a guarentee on the M.O.S. you enlist for BEFORE you leave, you should be fine. Most let them tell you to just enlist, go to basic, and they will sort out what you do from there. DONT DO IT THAT WAY!

Select your M.O.S. prior to departure for basic and have it on your contract!

I took Japanese in High Shcool for 2 years before I realized that it was too difficult a language for a mook. I still remember how to say $hit head in Japanese, actually it's the only thing I remember from the class.

While it being against the rules "Officially" to lie to a potential enlistee it's not against the rules to say nothing and nod your head at their thoughts of what they want. Remember recruiters can be like bad used car salesmen that'll tell you anything you want to hear just to get your business. A true gloden rule you need to remember if you are seriously thinking of joining is "GET IT IN WRITING!" If it's implied or promised make sure they have it on your contract otherwise you will find out the old saying, "My recruiter told me a lie," is true.
