Yes, the rods tend to be the first to go. They stretch and the little brass bearings wear to make a sloppy fit on the crank which will lead to premature engine failure. Don't take chances. One thing I might recommend depending on what engine that is, is that you may just want to look into a new mill altogether. By the time you bought all of what you are thinking of, in some cases it will be within in a few $'s of new mill.
