Is it my tune or is my k5.9 posessed????

If the engine is new, the binding you feel is most likely "pinch" all new engines have this, i may have missed it in previous posts but how much fuel has been thru it?

I thought it was pinch also, but after i removed the glow plug, to try to see if it would turn over easier, it got stuck and i had to use the " roto-start" to get it to turn over. I have run about a gallon of byrons rtr 20% with 16% lube, with the glow plug out should this engine still be this hard to turn over?

I'd follow your instints mackdaddy. You have some experience. After a gallon, it shouldnt get stuck. My buddy had a picco that had the same situation. We didn't seal it, had a helluva time keeping the temps down. It was the first nitro that we messed with. After about a gallon, it did the same thing. Would just die, then start right back up. What happened, we assume, is it sucked in some dirt from the air leak it most likely had and gnarled up the sleeve. It was a mess when we openned it up.

thanks, after i used the roto-start on it it seems to turn over more freely, but i can still feel it trying to stick or hang, could i have a bad bearing, or a bent crank? my .25 feels so nice when you turn it over by the flywheel, this thing feels like it has a burr, or something trying to hang it up. will it void my warranty if i take this engine apart? should i just send it back like it is? or since its turning over more freely should i try to piu it back in ? My common sense says box it up and send it back. what do you guys think?

Save yourself the headache and get a brand new engine. Maybe an O.S or LRP. Like I said, the K5.9 are known for being problematic.

thanks, man it sucks to have a new savage xl and a screwed up engine. i am going to send this mill back to HPI, everything i've heard about the k5.9 must be true, it was allways running hot if i leaned it out any, and now after only a gallon of fuel it's trrashed. definately not happy with this engine.

Neither was I it's hit and miss as far as the 5.9 goes. Save yourself the headache and get a good quality engine. My LRP .32 is a monster of an engine and runs way better than the 5.9 ever thought about. It may be smaller but it makes tons more power and is really easy to tune. It has been one of the most trouble free engines I have ever had.

I have taken the roto-start back plate off, everything looks good, put it back, took off the head, again everything looks good, checked it for a air leak, small bubble coming from where the screw that holds the carb on is. could this be my problem? and by the way it still acts like its getting stuck after you rotate it by hand a few times. if sealing it would fix it that would be great, but what if i seal it and it still does the same thing? I definately think this "posessed" k5.9 is getting sent back to HPI, heck, i'd rather have a a f4.6, i've allways had good service from the .28's in my savage x 's i've owned.

Well, if you seal it then decide to send it back, you'd have to get all the rtv cleaned off and all that. I'd slap the 25 in er and wait on the new mill. That leak would definitely cause problems tho.

thanks, i will just send it back then, i really appreciate all the advice, and it should run just fine with the trusty old .25 in her. I have no idea if they would do this but if they send me a new engine i would prefer a 4.6 pull-start, really wouldn't matter if it was the f4.6 or the k4.6, although i've never owned a k4.6, if i ask them for a .28 instead of this .36, do you think they may be willing to do that. and thanks again for all the advice, i'd be lost without you guys.

One more thing, i took the screw out that holds the carb tight and put it back in and tightened it and it still leaked when i did the soap suds test with a piece of fuel line. it's not leaking where the carb inserts into the engine its the screw that holds it all tight. guess i was just wondering if in the future i seal a engine with the same problem do i need to seal that screw that holds it tight?? just wonderin about that, but when i get a new engine from hpi i will definately seal it first.

not sure if they will let you trade for a .28 or not , yes seal the screw end , here is a link for sealing your nitro

If your new to nitro tuning all 3 needle carbs can be frustrating to tune , the 5.9 is a air leaking pig sealing is a most , Its is a good engine just tricky to tune I have 5 gal on mine my buddy has 13 on his only had one problem , the seal's in the MSN like to shrink and make trouble and if your new to tuning things like that can be hard to find or figure out , so after you break her in and get it all tuned in put RTV over the end of the MSN , and if you put the 5.9 on the shelf for awhile get a LRP.32 easy to tune and lots of power , hope this helps

Great news, called HPI support today and asked them what should i do and they said to send it back. I requested a 4.6 pull-start and was told no problem. All I have to say is THANKS HPI RACING, I had a leaky shock and they are sending me a new set of " Big Bores " also. I am a diehard HPI fan and never had to use their warranty service before but I can honestly say I'll never own anything else. THANKS AGAIN HPI. VERY PLEASED CUSTOMER HERE!!

Hey, thanks to all of you for the advice, man i would be lost without you guys, gettin the k5.9 ready to ship out in the morning, meanwhile, I've got my trusty .25 ready to go in so i will be back at the local park bashing in a few days. thanks again RCNT, this really is the best on the web.

Savage xl with nitro-star .25 !

Hey everyone, I have sent back the k5.9 to HPI RACING for a replacement engine, just got the .25 nitro-star all snuggled up good in the xl and ready to fire it up tomorrow. I figure i can use this mill to bash with till i get my replacement from HPI, and who knows, if the trusty ole .25 does ok i just may leave it in a while. from what i remember the .25 was a fairly stout mill. not much time on it, that's why i kept it back. well, in a day or so i expect to return to the local park for some good bashing. I'll let ya know how it does, till then. peace out !:)

I know this thread is a little old but I'm guessing you are still having these problems.

This video is good for learning how to tune [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nt5tA3vRl0"]Nitro RC Engine Tuning 2 (useing a HPI- Savage 25) - YouTube[/ame]

Hope this helps!
