RC Driving Style
:angry:Well, First of all let me say its a good 10 degrees cooler here today, so anyway, i go to the park, heres the deal the engine starts easy, will idle, but when i try to drive it it quits as i try to give ita lil throttle, i lean the lsn some that helps, but everytime i try to lean the hsn out it wants to die on me again. i totally admit that i am just learning to tune. i did get it to sit and idle without quitting, and then the servos started acting crazy, low reciever battery i think and i had to call it a day, by the way temps was about 230 any input, will be appreciated. GEE I WONDER IF GUYS LIKE ROLEX STARTED OUT THIS WAY? KIDDIN ROLEX BUT HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And another thing, you "BIRDS" need to fork over some input cause i am seriously thinkin this dang motors "POSESSED"!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you try richining the hsn as well? Sounds like it may be too rich. And yes low batteries will cause servos to not respond or go bonkers. Charge everything up good and start it up let it ladle to running temps and if it still Boggs when you throttle try to lean (turn clockwise) the HSN 1/4 turn at a time and see if that helps.

Let it idle not Ladle. Sorry

thanks, i am using r5 cold plugs, my father said to get some medium cold, and medium and try them, and see if that helps. I am using byrons rtr 20 % , they were out at the L.H.S so i bought some "Wildcat Eliminator" 20 % but i haven't used any of that yet. This was all Byrons. I will eventually get this crazy engine tuned................... I HOPE!!!!!!

I have run Wildcat Eliminator fuel a lot. It's pretty good stuff I used 20% nitro and 14% lube. my LRP .32 does pretty well on it.

well, this stuff is 20 % with 18% oil content, it was highly recommended by some rc group that was there that claimed all they did was bash, said they have had good luck with it. I am gonna order some medium glow plugs and see what effect that has on my mill. I just happen to have a almost new Nitro Star .25 that i've been saving, kinda thinking about maybe switching out the mills and selling the k5.9 as its a notorious "gas hog" oh, well, maybe i can get it tuned ??????? but who knows !

If you're going to switch mills i wouldn't bother with the .25 put something in there that will perform up to the truck's potential. Like an LRP .28 or .30. I have the LRP .32 and that mill is a real monster I love it.

if your a basher use high oil content fuel. if you race use low oil race fuels. thats my theory.
i started out using byrons in my tmaxx. hard time tuning, poor performance. switched to traxxas and the truck seems much easier to get a tune from stock settings.
new savage x bought a couple weeks ago was broke in on traxxas fuel, then i switched to Losi fuel. truck runs awesome. wants to died and puke out at first till it warms up, but after she gets warm she is a total beast.
will probably run the losi fuel in the traxxas when that icky blue oil they call fuel is gone. 1.5 gal left

Smoke coming from back-roto-start plate

Ok, i have been trying to tune this monster, i have the lsn pretty close, but the engine keeps dying for no reason it starts right back up and today i noticed smoke coming from around the back plate, where the roto-start goes in, i am thinkin i have an air leak, but could it be something worse like a cracked block or sometrhing? I AM PULLING MY HAIR OUT OVER THIS MILL. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

You could try putting some high temp silicone along the backplate....this may help
I actually just learned this myself and am going to do it to my engine
However if it's smoking it could be something more........um if you feel like breakin the truck down a little I'd take a look at the engine and see if anything is damaged...take off the root start plate
Maybe something outta the ordinary will stand out??
Hope this helps man

Thanks, i've looked for loose or missing screws, the seal from the header to the block seems ok, but i think you're right, maybe i need to take it out, i've never sealed a engine before, but i hope thats all it is, could the block itself be cracked even very slightly? just drivin me nuts.

I would be losin my mind to hahaha .....my 4.6 is dead right now lol ( think it needs a rebuild ) at least yours starts! Haha
.....I have never sealed one either but I just heard that and it will help prevent air leaks......idk if that's your problem though.........it could be cracked in the back near the roto start plate causing it to smoke, have u ever crashed the truck or hit anything severe?
I would take it out, wipe all the grease and gunk off and give it a full look over and see what ya find :\

thanks, no i haven't had any crashes, and i hate to have to pull the engine out but it just will not stay running and with the smoke coming from the back i keep thinking somethings wrong somewhere. It ran so well at first, now its been through about a gallon of fuel and its like it's wore plumb out or something. JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND !!

hmh not sure if someone else can help ya out cuz I'm stumped .....only thing id say to do would be to take out the engine.
i actually bought a 5.9 a while ago off ebay...brand new warranty and everything.....started the break-in and engine was revving up on its own..tried tuning it and nothing would work..anyways i ended up sending it back too hpi and something was messed up in the carb (manufacturers defect) so they fixed it .......I'm assuming yours is fairly new (only a gallon of fuel through it you said?)
i mean if your up for it, it probably wouldn't hurt calling hpi tech guys and ask them....they know their stuff.....and if you have the warranty theyll prb take the engine back and fix or replace it if its a manufacturers defect.......idk I'm just spit ballin but maybe that'll help :D

Thanks, I still have the reciept from when i bought it in February, I've never had to use their warranty service before but if i find a defect in this engine i am definately gonna give them a shout. Tomorrow i am gonna try one more time to keep it running and if it's still actin crazy then i guess i will have to pull it out, and see whats causing it to act up. Thanks for the info, i'll post again as soon as i know something.

my truck just randomly stopped last weekend, sat there and idled giving me the middle finger. figgured it was sayin it was tired, but as it turns out the throttle/brake servo stopped. put a traxxas servo in for a test and everything worked. called HPI support on monday and they sending a new servo, didnt even ask any questions. great support!
so i would give them a call now rather than later, you may be doing more damage to the truck the way it is. and they may not cover that

I think you are right , i will give them a call today and tell them about my problem, sure hope they can help.

I'd spend the hour or so sealing it as opposed to the weeks you'll wait on hpi. If they do simply wanna swap motors with you, seal the new one before installing it. It's simple insurance.

Ok, i called HPI RACING today, told them about my problem, they said take it out and send it back, I have it out and when i try to turn the engine over with the flywheel, it gets stuck, i haven't disassembled this engine but somethings definately "binding" it up when i try to turn it over. I am gonna send this mill back and let them fix or replace it.
