AIM- AOL instant Messenger is pretty popular

Also there is-

Windows messenger/MSN messenger
Yahoo Messenger

those 2 are also pretty popular

I use MSN, Yahoo, Aim and MyspaceIM. They all have their issues, but MSN is perhaps the cleanest, since it doesn't want to install any spyware or toolbars.

Yahoo has an issue, ever since version 8, that makes a computer VERY slow to resume after hibernation. The solution; log out before hibernation.

AOL just likes to install a ton of garbage. I use an add-in called Adhack. It removes all the crud. The tradeoff; it installs an older but still usable AIM client.

MyspaceIM, it's still fairly new and has its' issues. Chief among them is the spam controls, or lack there-of.

There's also the oldskool IRC programs, like mIRC. I use it from to time, where I moderate a California channel.

It's all personal preference. Also, MSN and Yahoo are pretty much able to use each others' networks.

And on the subject of multi-network, there is a client called Trillian that allows you to use one program for all networks, even IRC.

I would suggest AIM its the most popular by far if you ask me.
Also if you want a messaging system with out all the bullcrap like spyware and that stuff look into Trllian. Its basically a host for AIM Yahoo AIM and ICQ. Its a great program. There is a free version and a pro version with more features.
Here is the link:

I would suggest anyone who uses AIM MSN or Yahoo look into this program. Its a great program and it will allow you to sign into your AIM ICQ Yahoo and MSN at the SAME time all in one widow. There are also a variety of skins so you can customize it. Also its guaranteed free of those stupid "add ons" other messaging services come with..

Ohh yeah and you can also set it up for multiply user accounts and it saving all your info such as skins and etc. My sister and I share it and it works great.

AIM tended to Fugg with my puter. so i dumped for the easier to use Yahoo.

I agree, yahoo does want to intall things like tool bars which is a PITA, but they can be uninstalled also.

MSN is pretty decent too.

I tried Yahoo a while back, and I removed it. Even the Yahoo mailbox was set up to invite spam. Absolutely NO MORE Yahoo in my computer.

Including at the keyboard? (hehe, sorry, just had to).

I agree though; spam on yahoo is insane. I get an average of 3-4 a day that make it past the filters, with roughly 800 more getting trapped. I've learned to make a game out of it, misspelling my name intentionally so I know _exactly_ where the spam comes from. Nothing like contacting a company and telling them what I think of them for selling my information.

I also forgot one annoying aspect of ICQ. About ten years ago, I met a woman that's 10 years older than myself on there. Since then, she's stalked me from afar, contacting me every now and then. Did I mention she's from Ohio?

I installed it again for ha-ha's the other nite, and all I got was spam (I even remembered my UIN and password from 10 years ago - scary). Seems like everyones' migrated off to other programs.

Really? My daughter used to have it on my computer but I seemed to get a lot of trojan viruses through it.

Thanks again for your opinions! I haven't decided what I'll use yet but the Trillian program looks interesting.

Yeah I've had it for about 2 years now. Never had on problem. Its guaranteed no viruses no spyware no BS. I love the fact I can sign in to my AIM and old Yahoo account. It cleans up the desk top alittle and even though its active it wont take up space on your tabs at the bottom. I hate when it gets cluttered because you have several window open and etc. I wouldn't trade Trillian for anything and I've used just about every messaging system out there. And one thing I like you can set alarms whether it be a beep or window that someone has signed on.

I would suggest that anyone who uses Yahoo, MSN, AIM, or ICQ atleast give it a try. It anything you don't like it uninstall and move on.
