i haven't roofed since i was 16 and i can't remember how it get the first row going. i think that you place the tabs towards the ridge. then lay over them normally and stagger them as you move up.it will pry come back to me when i start but i just can't remember. i think that you have to cut a tab off also or something. its just my porch roof not the main roof. thats way to high and you can't walk it with out toe-kicks. please correct me if i'm wrong.
 
You're correct. Lay the first row with the tabs up toward the gable. Then cut 1/2 tab of the when starting the bottom row again then as you go up,a full tab,tab and 1/2, 2 tabs and finally use the 1/2 tab. Back to a full shingle then and then start again with the 1/2 tab cut off. It'll come to you when you get up there.
 
thanks. my wife looked at me like i was on crack when i said that i was going to do it myself. i should have it done in a day with tear off and shingle. we will see how large the soft spot it and what that will take to resheet that part.
 
You will get into the rhythm of it and beable to get it done quickly. Its definitely a job one guy can do. Good luck!
 
The first row goes on with the shingles facing the top so the solid part of the first one creates a blockage for any water that would get through the slits. Then cover that with the first row of shingles facing down.
Measure and chalk a line every five rows. Cut off the ends in one shot to get a nice clean line.
Pay a local kid to clean up your yard. :D
 
Make sure you wear protection too, you dont want to get shingles! :hehe:

That was my job once for a friend of mine... His roof had 3/8" plywood vs the typical 1/2", so all I could do was pick up debris and carry shingles... I carried every single bundle of 30 year shingles for the entire roof up the ladder. That completely sucked. Was tough keeping up with 4 guys shingling with air nailers.
 
all of the kids are to lazy and my son is only 6. after looking at it i'm going to patch it and then just redo it in the spring. after pricing out shingles and tar paper i can't afford it right know.
 
Will you be doing a complete tear off? If there's just one layer of shingles on right now, you can go over it. Just make sure you have the proper joists and sheeting to carry the load.
 
no there is 2 layers. there is a large soft spot in the front so i want to tear it all off and resheet with plywood to fix it up. city code is 3 layers. but it won't take much to tear it off.
