How do you come up with your design? What inspires you?
Do you just sit there and stare at the lid until you have an idea?

This one cam about as I was starring at my glass of water.:)

It's weird. Either I have a great idea when I buy the body and buy the paint for it then, too, or I just pull out a body from my stack of un-painted bodies and just start masking and painting. I am down to about 5 unpainted bodies, 3 for the road car and 2 for Maxx type. At one point I was working on a body about one to two per week. Last was the Jeep CJ-8 for the Maxx. Next one will be the Ford GT for the RS4-3 SS or the '41 Willys Coupe for the Revo.

I just look for like flames or lightning or something on the internet and print it out and lay it on my body to see if it looks good. OR I use templates and draw out my design. then i mask it, and paint it. I'm probably either going to paint a Novarossi theme or flames for my new buggy body.

I sit there and stare at it like a goon until I get an idea. The last lid I painted, I had a TOTAL brain fart and couldnt think of ANYTHING for 3 days. Sometimes I will flip threw some rc mags to try to get some ideas, but most of mine, are from my own noodle and usually hand drawn or Ill design my own mask and use the vinyl cutter to cut it out..hehe

Lucky... lol I have my own technique that works very well, if you use the right tape.

-Draw out a design (flames for instance) on a piece of paper.
-flip the piece of paper over
-Put about 4 layers over top of the backside of the flames (dont cut them to fit, just lay em down on the back of the paper to cover the design).
-Next, flip the paper over, and cut out the flames, along with the tape.
-You will then have flames with tape on the back of them.
-Rip the flame (on the piece of paper) off along with 1 or 2 layers of tape so you can stick it on the body.

Theres your mask. I suggest using blue painters tape from home depot so the paint doesn't bleed through... I used regular masking tape and it bled really bad.

Buggy next time ya got a lid to paint, let me know and I can send ya a scap piece of Vinyl. That might be a little easier for ya. Anything scrap under 12 inches by 12 inches I can't cut..

Thanks man... that would be perfect! This is just when you only have tape, paper and a pencil. It works well...

this is a body i did for my brother with that technique.

If you use wax paper you won't have to use as much tape. Just place the tape on the shiny side with the tape slightly overlapping. Same effect, just easier on the tape consumption. You can also cut peices of wax paper in 8 1/2 x 11 dimensions and tape the shiny side of the wax paper. Feed it through your printer and you have your mask ready to cut and place on the body.

Sweet! Yeah I like doing the freehand ones too, because then you dont have to worry about seeing another person with it. It is a little trickier though..
