Anyway I heard some wierd chirping kind of noise that sounded kind of exotic took a look and found him perched in a palm. He was very friendly allowing me to hand feed him but would not come with me. Anyway 3 of my cats took notice and hounded him and being a stubborn bird would not come with me. So I left and sure enough the cats went after him. I went back outside couldn't find him and thought he left. But then something went all over in my hair gave me a heart attack and crawled up my back. Sure enough it was him again perched on my shoulder. After that the damn thing wouldn't get off, I looked like some retarded pirate, but now 30 min later he's in my dad's greenhouse.

So anyone know what it is?

Should I keep it?

Do I have mites now since it was all up in my hair?:fro:

Hey man, to be honest with you, you may want to check with local authorities to confirm the species and make sure they are legal. If it's some sort of exotic that is banned in the US and your caught with it they won't care if you say he just showed up. Being that your located where you are it's really not that uncommon to see illegal birds that have literally been tossed over a fence from Mexico into the US and have gotten loose and made their way north.

It's definately a parrot (one of about 350 or so species), but it's not a lovebird. The eyes are way too small, and the markings are different.

Heres' a picture of a lovebird (at least, of the type that I used to have... never buy them in pairs, btw. They don't call 'em lovebirds for nothin.).

You did right in putting it in the greenhouse - hopefully a cat won't get it.

edit; heres' your buddy. It's called a "Parrotlet". It's basically a mini parrot. Capable of speech, so watch yer mouth, sailor!

Its got a tag on its leg but I can't read it. And I came to the conclusion is was a parrotlet after some googling but, I still don't know what it is, all the parrotlets I've seen on google have green faces. I'm gonna keep it for a week in the greenhouse. I'll get some food, since I'm giving it apples, nuts, and soggy whole grain bread right now. If I see a lost ad within the week I return it, if not its mine. But it seems to like the greenhouse, made a home in my dads staghorn fern.

This is the second bird I found, when I was 11 I found a love bird that was being attacked by crows. It was in bad shape with only one eye, I kept it alive for about 2 days before it died.

Hey keep it,maybe you are a real pirate.Or will become one.
Arrgghh! Shiver me timbers I need more seamen on my poop deck matey:idea: !.... I do all the driving on my dad's boat(he's asian, can't risk it:chinese:). The one time I did let him drive was at midnight and he almost ran aground going back to the docks. Besides I'm the only one who knows how to read a radar screen.

Looks like a quaker to me...
quaker-parrot-0027.jpg

they are a ton of wild ones here near me.....cool birds....my old neighbor found one half dead from a cat and nursed it back...hated everyone but her......get it checked out if you intend to keep it....any animal found in the wild should be...even if it's obviously a lost pet.....

Ack, it's a quaker and its illegal in CA. Looking to adopt it out to someone in another state.

LOL I wouldn't worry about the animal laws too much as long as he is well taken care of and not a real threat to anyone and you aren't planning on your house being raided I think the worst that can happen is they take him away......I've had some pretty exotic reptiles and never got fiddlesticked w/ in NYC......the laws are a lil different now up there though.....no more pythons and boas.....

You could always make a sling with a wrist rocket and shoot it through your neighbors window?

LOL J/K

DO you own a framing hammer?

I'd keep it except, what the hell do I do if it needs a vet? These things live for 20 or more years. And I have verified it as a quaker on a quaker parrot board.

Looks like the only thing to do would be to call someone in animal control to come and get it.

Too bad. Sounds like it would make you a great pet.

if it has a tag on his leg you might be able to track the owner....does he have one?
sucks to have a domesticated animal destroyed like that.....

Think that's what they would do? Got to be a different way.
Since you have already found a forum, they should be able to help? After all, to have created a forum they love the species.

Why are the illegal to have?
