So today I traded a memory stick for my friend's PS2. Then just 4 hours later I read an article that Sony is lowering the price to $99 for a PS2. Well, *I* got MINE for FREE! Take that, Sony :D

You know how when you buy something and the price goes down or a new one comes out right after you buy it...

lol i know what you mean! when i leave a store after paying like $100 for something before i leave the parking lot i see a sign saying the new price is $50 lol...

ps2 ftw! I've had one for a few years now and have no need for anything else at the moment, i can't get myself to pay several hundreds of dollars for a ps3.

Thats good news, I am gonna need to replace my ps2 soon, it's starting to act up, and since sony decided to discontinue producing the backwards compatable ps3 I will not be buying one. I have waaaaay to many ps2 games to start over again, and be stuck with a bunch of games I can't play, nor will I trade them in at game stop for 10cents on the dollar. And for how often I play my games ps2 is just fine for me.

OUCH! That's such a bad decision on Sony's part. Backwards compatibility is a must nowadays. Along with the refusal to lower the price... man, Sony is way behind the game.

Definitely a stupid decision on Sony's part. I guess if you have no ps2 games it's no biggie, but I have a lot of games that I still enjoy playing.

I got mine free too! And got a bunch of game with it also. Then it started making a clicking noise...got that fixed and it started clicking AGAIN.....PS2 is such a pain!

But hey! It was FREE!

yea BIG mistake on Sonys behalf for not making the backwards compatable ps3...
not many people will go and buy a ps3 for there 1st gaming console at that price and the ones who do are MAINLY gaming freaks which already have many ps2 games

That's what I said, they have discontinued production of the backwards compatible ps3s. So the only way to get one now is to buy a used one, then you have to hope the previous owner did not abuse it, drop it, or whatever. I just don't like buying used electronics.

i was referring to the quote stated not to your post :)

ps i never owned anything past ps1 :)

I know, sorry about the confusion, it's all good. I just really think it's a stupid move on Sony's part. I would like to get a ps3, but I won't now because of this. I don't understand why in this day and age they would choose to discontinue the backwards compatible version.

That seems kinda silly that they would not utilize the technology of backwards compatibility. I mainly took the dive for the PS3 as soon as I was confident that Blu-Ray won the HD war. I figured if I'm gonna buy a blu ray player I might as well get a nice VG system with it as well. I don't even know if mine is backward compatible to be honest. I think mine is 40 gig and it does not have the flip up on the front with all the inputs for the different memory cards and such.

look at it the way of sony's view tho, they make more money from the kids goin out and buying the games over again or new ones due to the constant need for a new game...

ultimate solution to all the issues, get a htpc. outperforms the ps3's outdated gfx chipset by far and gives u the option of emulating the games of whatever console thats there.
--- of corse that is just a brain fart of myself, cuz i dont really like the ps3's price performance ratio.

but in the end its all personal preference...

Personally, I do not see a price/performance issue. I think they have it priced right actually. I paid $400 for mine and IMO that was a fair price at the time for a nice VG system and Blu Ray player. I'm also not a hardcore gamer so any arguments concerning it's technical abilities go in one ear and right out the other. All I know is the games I have I enjoy, they look great and Blu Ray movies look and sound amazing with my DLP and surround sound. If you're a tech geek I'm sure there is always better to be had with the right computer setup but for casual players it's a pretty good buy.

I gave the same for mine. The reason they stopped doing the backwards compatability was because it was causing too many glitches and crashes with the system. Maybe they should have given Bill Gates a shout. He prolly could have fixed them. As far as the PS3 goes it is pretty complex. You can even install a whole OS on it and basically almost use it as a computer as well as upgrade hard drives and all. I seem to find out soemthing new that it will do every month. I havent installed an os on mine yet. Prolly because I dont have the disks for one.

yeah last thing i heard was that you can run a linux os on them ;)
