i didn't believe it when i first read it. i didn't believe it when i saw it happen twice in the same day to other engines. Saturday, however, made a believer out of me.

It's true. The Hyper 8-port pullstarts break too easy.

i was tuning my engine for race day. i had my finger over the exhaust pipe, pushing fuel up to the carb. on maybe the second pull, i heard a small click and the pull start would not recoil.

thank god i can use a starter box, because I'm getting one.

i wish i had the resouces. i would either:

1.) make an aftermarket pullstart for the 8-port that has some balls.

2.) make a rotostart adapter for the 8-port.

either product would sell well. (any manufactures out there listening? *hint* *hint*)

yes, my friend had a hyper 8 and he hated the pull start. i think that one day if broke 3 times so he just went and got a new engine. hey i got one question for u, it is a little of the subject but here it is. i have been hearing that u can put a roto start on to the XTM 24.7. i have the 24.7 and i want a roto start on it but i dont want to go and buy one and then it now fit. so do u know if it can, i have been lookin everywhere and i can't find out if it can or not.?

RobH, I feel your pain. I broke two 8p pullstarts before I found a way on MaxxTraxx to fix the pullstart. I don't have pictures, so I will try to explain it the best way I can. When you look inside the pullstart, there is a hook on the end of the recoil spring that hooks into the pullstart case. Nine out of ten times when the rope won't retract, that hook came undone. To keep the hook from popping up and out I put a small screw there to keep it in the slot. That was it. I now have over two gallons on that pullstart without failure(knock on wood).

i have that page bookmarked too. the part that doesn't seem right to me is this:

this person is wrapping the hex that turns the engine with a piece of metal. this is the "jurry rigged" way. 1) you're producing a sleave of metal that can slide off and bind up. 2) you're creating rounded corners which will cause it to spin if you come up a little short.

i'd rather see an adapter that was manufactured just for the 8-port. savage 8-port owners would be all over it.

too bad that hex doesn't come off that shaft. if you could replace that hex with a larger one, this mod wouldn't be half bad. i'm guessing the hex is probably pressed on to the shaft. in which case, you could take it off if you're careful. finding the correct size replacement hex and a press to put it on might be a little more difficult.

I thought about that too. I guess another way you could get around that is to cut a small piece of metal for each side and maybe use something like JB Weld to hold it in place. Sort of like building up the sides. It would require a little more work but nothing a Dremel couldn't handle. :)

jbweld doesn't strike me as a good idea either. i guess you could braize (no idea how that's spelled) it on. that would require a very small gas torch and mad skills.

i donno, it kinda sucks to have a Savage + an 8-port. :( can't use a starter box. i saw Chris's picco .26 had a rotostart adapter. it must be a compatible engine.

Yeah it sucks. I have the busted knuckles to prove it. :) But it has been better after taking Sky's advice about using a longer piece of fuel tubing so I can have better access to the pull start.
