While trying to start my savage x, the roto start turns it over for 1 second then just spins free. I loosened up the glow plug but still doing it. Without the glowplug in it spins and turns over the engine fine. I am wondering what to do.

Remove the backplate from the engine and clean the OWB and the shaft with alcohol. Be careful, there's a little pin in there that has to go back.

You might not have a OWB unless you have a pullstart, so this pic is similar to the track that the spring loaded pin has to ride in to engage the starter as well as freewheel when the engine is running.
You might have a worn or broken spring or pin, or it's sticking in the up position.

Mine does the same thing some times. Try takin ur owb out and cleaning it with carb or brake cleaner I've even used gun cleaner somthing with low oil content this somtimes makes mine wrk. but ut mite have to replace ur owb.

wow, i can't believe all the problems with HPI one-way bearing. i have never had problems and i am not usually that nice to my rotostarter. sometimes it gets the 18V dewalt treatment!

My friend has already been thru 3 owb due to the roto start on his savy X. Only had it since christmas.

Only issues iv ever had is if I'm running rich or using after run oil and it starts to slip. I have ran about 2 gal through the savage with no issues. Like the manual states only give it 5 second bursts with the roto start. I give it less than that and it's usually started by the 3rd shot.

It's all in the tune. I've had my savage x4.6 since it came out with the 2.4 controls. Same one way, only had 1 problem with it, during break in, it came from HPI full of grease. Cleaned it out, no problems since...

LOL I've been a little dissapointed with my savage my owb gave me trouble during breakin and has continued too.

No clutch: bad idea.

Good idea: set the clutch to the lowest setting it will turn the engine over.
It will make the OWB last longer and prevent internal damage to the engine when hydrolocked/flooded.

I agree, BUT, how many of these "Gurus" are going to lower the clutch setting??? I'm guessing..not many, they'll put it on the drill setting and high, then crank away FORCING the engine to clear the excess fuel and putting all of that stress on the internals.

There's a lot of 'shock' on the OWB, especially when the engine is new. Several years ago someone at the track went through 6 of them and only got half way through break in. They didn't slip, the outer race actually cracked making it too loose to grab any more. After complaining to HPI they sent him 6 freebies but also told him to change to a pull start. The engine started much quicker due to the higher RPM of the pull start, and he never replaced another OWB due to damage.
I would strongly recommend loosening the glow plug when starting to eliminate the shock to the bearing.

I went in and cleaned the owb and it worked. I went to the hobby shop and left it with them to do a quick tune and do a once over on the car. I'm quit new to the nitro game, another problem I was having was my glow plug igniter was not working well, so it made the engine hard to start. Hopefully when I get it back tomorrow it runs and works well. Thank you guys for all your help. I really enjoy this forum, I hope to stick around and learn more.

Can u put a pull start on a savage x? I've never tried it looks like there wouldnt be enough room between the shock towers and the engine?

theres room, but its tight to get a grab of the handle. i used a long zippy-tie tied to the pullstart handle so it would be easier to get a hold of

You can put a pull start on.... my savage x ss came with one in the picture it is between the cooling head and fuel tank.
