Take it from experience, I would think real long and hard about that deal. I got my first savage used, and was quickly replacing it part by part, so I broke down and got a new one. I got a real good deal on the first (200), but the engine was just about cooked. Kwong was right about the tell tale signs of a good beating (or 10). If that roll bar is bent, the stock 21BB head is cracked, and the pipe has major signs of wear and tear, it's been bashed, and hard.
Here's some other things I had to do to my old truck: replace the engine from the new truck (Hyper 21 went into the new one), replace the main bearings in the rear diff, replace the shocks, body, center dogbones (the outdrives had the HD bones already), replace the rims, replace the bearings in the clutch, new spur gear, and fuel system. That's about when I said screw it and got a new truck. Now the old one is about up to snuff and I might sell it, maybe, maybe not.
But when someone says "it's only had 5 tanks through it", run, unless you know them real well. It only takes 1 tank to cook a mill, and then it's toast. Just my 2 cents, but do what you want. For the money, I'd wait and get the new SS kit and a decent radio.
