I have an HPI RTR 3. I really wish I had waited for the TYPE SS But I ended up upgrading my RTR 3. I got the turnbuckles, the 2 speed tranny, HOT Bodies Thick chassis an I placed an Associated Muffler. Part number 7730. No matter what I do My brother 's NTC3 that has the exact engine as mine blows me away at the line. It seems his has a lot more torque off the line! His to speed is must be close to 40MPH+!
I placed an OS 10 E carb on it but I kept burning up plugs left and right. Th LHS told me that since the heatsink on my motor was turning to a light purple that it was running too LEAN. That was the best setting I got that gave me incredible power.
I have the 12RSS Motor handy but it is brand new. and it has a different Carb. Is that the same 5.5mm Carb that they sell?
Please someone help me get my car running the way it should.

Just because you have the same engine, the cars chassis will also determine alot of the performance. The gears on your two speed will also make a diffrence, if his gearing is diffrent, try changing to gears that are well...more "aggressive"(higher teeth numbers) And I hate to admit this but, the TC3 is a better car than the RS4 3. Alot of people have that RS43, including me(RTR) and I am completely satisfied with it. And If your not running the .12R SS, which engine might you be running? I believe that the 12rss comes with the big bore 5.5mm carb. That is an option on the RTR version of the RS4 3.

BTW: 40Mph isnt that fast, get a O.S. or Novarossi and youll whoop your brother. Getting some Shiny MIP CVD's would also quicken up your car off the line. Lighter drivetrain=faster acceleration and top speed. And the last suggestion, what body might you be running? If its the Lambo, the F150, or camaro, you might wanna change to a Accord or Stratus body. Aerodynamics on a On-Road car can make a big diffrence. Last But not Least-Driver makes up over 50% of the performance. A bad driver with a good car will lose to a good driver with a poopy car anyday.

silent makes some good points, keep in mind that no matter what u do, the hpi was designed to be a basher, and the NTC3 was designed to be a race car. gearing will play a significant part, as will clutch engagement. along with that LSN settings will also matter durning off the line acceleration. please keep in mind though, that contrary to popular belief, 40mph is quite fast, please refer to my post in the onroad forum, regarding clocked top speeds with a radar gun.

Sorry but the RS4 3 is a very heavy kit when comapred to the NTC3. You can try different gear combinations (good point Silent) to get off the line quicker. You can also move the end of the header closer to the pipe end without touching and this will give you more low end grunt. Another thing to try is clutch material and adjustment shims. I say sell it on Ebay and try the new R40 if you want to stick with HPI. That kit should give the NTC3 a run for its money. Also bearing quality does mean the difference in speed.

Yeah the TC3 is a faster setup. You should check out nitronewbie's thread on his radar recordings. He's got a list of cars clocked by a policeman. I'm learning this the hardway, but the RS4 3 was never made to take on so much power. I've talked to Wolfgang at wolfpack radicals (numerous times) about me breaking parts on my Type SS. And he always gives me the same bottom line, the RS4 3 was not made to go so fast.

It sounds like you've done as much as the engine will do and even more (by leaning it so much). But if you want to go faster and get him at the tailend, try any or all of this:

1.Change up your pinion gears. You can go red for top end.
2. Change up you spur gears to 41 for 2nd and 45 for 1st.
3. If you're running 20% nitro. You can go 30% and add another copper washer to your glo plug. This will run your engine out more but you leaned it out so much already.

I've tried this with exception to #3.

007 makes another good point regarding the fact that the hpi was never ment to be a race winner. its like trying to get a honda civic to handle and accelerate as well as an F1 car. no matter how much u spend, it will never be an F1. thats it.

As you can see (if familiar with the RS4 3 RTR) I bought every speed and lightweight hop-up I could find and still wasn't that fast. It just was never going to be a racer. So I sold it on E-bay and bought my Sirio. After doing a bunch of research and not wanting to go big dog and get the Serpant it was between the NTC3 or the R40 but when Mayhem posted the info on the R40 it made my mind up I'm getting the TC3 for the simple reason I like driveshafts!

Yeah, I run with 37 and 41 spur gears, bought a RB engine, got a wolf pack 2 speed, and all that. I have it competing with mjime's yoko and other cars like the 4 tec with the 2.5. I spent too much already and I'm busting spur gears left and right. It's not fun when you bust gears and have to wrench while the others are running.:depress:

hey humboldblazer i think i see all the carbon parts but befor you sold the rs4 3 did you think of getting the lighter chassis and a motor w/o a pull start like a sirrio .12 i saw a guy w/ this and he was competing and beating a ntc3 w/ a sirro.12. :smart:

Thanks you guys, I just got the car and I want to make this car fast. The 12RSS engine is supposed to be that but now I can't even get the engne mounts! Does anyone n=know the part number? The LHS..Hobby People told me that the kit engine has the mounts on the engine but the picture on the box says different! I will try the gearing solution and but cvd's all around.
I will keep you guys posted of my progress!! Any more advise would be really helpful!!

I did think about that but I pretty much came to the conclusion I needed a different kit if I was going to be dumping money in like that. I spent like a grand on that car and I just could have bought a NTC3 and a Rossi for that much.

hey humbolt did you really spend that much on an that car. did you ever do this:radio:? its preatty sweet do you havelike a parts list or somethig that i could see. i also see that you have an .15ss, did you ever see how fast it ran :contract:

It was fast but not as fast as my friends stock single speed NTC3 RTR. I bought the JR XR3i system for it like $200 plus the kit was $350, plus I paid like $180 for the engine. Motor Savers Air Filter, HPI 2 speed tranmission, All MIP CVD's, Hot Bodies F/R steering knuckles, Hot Bodies F/R carbon fiber shock towers, HB caron fiber upper deck, 5 cell hump, JR on/off switch, HPI comp bearings, HPI R5 wheels with Advan tires and HPI "Pro moulded inserts", HB purple wheel nuts, Dynamite pipe, HPI high performance header, racing clutch & flywheel, I think was just about it but you can see the kit, new engine, and radio were $730 bucks so all the rest of the stuff listed I think easily amounts to a grand. My question is how do you guys not spend SO much money?

WOOOOOOW:OMG: i can't belive that a 1000$ car w/ all the lightweight parts and the 2speed couldnt take on th STOCK tc3RTR i just hav ethe 15 ss 2 speed and an ae tuned pipe and i could take on the tc3 rtr :OMG: :OMG:

you might be able to take him on but did you win?

Also my tunning skills were slim and none at the time. I have learned so much since then. Might have been part of the problem.

ohh okay yeah tuning whould be a major prblem when racing (i should know I've blown 2 engines already) :censored:

The stock engine mount part number is 86045, a vented flywheel will help too.

Wow! Thanks everybody for making this a really helpful thread!I want to go aluminum too but I want speedFIRST!!!:flamer: Does a lightened flywheel reall help? What about a racing clutch? I am trying to install a 12RSS I got for free..BRAND new!! what luck! Anyways I am not sure of the part number to actually buy for the mounts..maybe the A920? Right now my car is out of commission till I get the engine on and broken in.I will keep all of you posted of my progress!!Thanks:beer:
