RC Driving Style
Hey all

I'm new to these forums and new to nitro RC too. I purchased myself a HPI RS4 3 Evo + the other day, got it going all sweet while breaking in the engine, but not long after that the glow plug died. No big issue tho just replaced the glow plug and it was running again.

Not long after that tho some issues started. First the car hates to idle, some times I will start it up and it runs for 10 seconds, makes a click noise and dies. Other times it will idle for up to a minute then click and die. Seems total random but at some stage it will make that click noise and die.

When its driving I can't really give it to much throttle, when i do put my finger down the engine make a struggling noise then the car dies. Even if I slowly build up the speed once it gets fast it happens.

whenever I pick up the car after its been running a fair amount of slightly thick brown liquid comes out of the exhaust (but the engine was not flooded in the first place) I also see a lot of fuel bubbling out around the glow plug even when the plug is tightly in there.

I have only really slightly tuned the high speed needle but other then that not much else. One other thing that comes to mind is the fact that the guys that sold me the car also recommended and sold me fuel that was 15% nitro. Yet later on in the instructions it recommends 20% - 25% could this be part of the issue?

If anyone has ideas please let me know, thanks :)

P.S. Is it just me is is the fuel line from the tank to the engine in a dumb place, it rubs against the gears and stops the car taking of with very little throttle. Anyone else with this car share my opinion?

I'm not 100% sure about the nitro content but I've allways ran 20% in mine. What engine is that running? I believe it's the 3.0 and those are pretty tough little mills. When you changed the glow plug, did you make sure to replace the copper washer?

Sounds to me the engine is running too rich. Check everything to make sure you don't have any air leaks.

check to make sure that you did not cross thred the glow plug and make sure you replaced the copper washer. there should not be fuel bubbling out around it. If the car is running sluggish it is rich. How many tanks have you run through it?

Um.. I think about 8 tanks, and yes I'm almost 100% sure I did change over the copper washer, if I had not changed it over what issue would that be responsible for?

In regards to the first reply the engine is a T3.0.

Guys its getting even worse...

I had it running not long before I started this thread, I went back to the car to do more tuning, I can barely get it to start. I'm pulling away at the pull start for like 10 minutes, checking the engines not flooded (its not) checked and found out the glow plug and started are fine. It turned over twice and now I have given up trying to start the darn thing. The pull started is really tight and clicky, it just is like a mission to get the thing to start.

help :(

My Mill occasiaonally makes a click noise and stops, but they dont like to idle at a very low RPM. Funny thing is when mine clicks theres a little tug on the pullstart. Maybe raise the idle.
I've heard the 3.0 Hpi mills get harder and harder to start. Invest in a rotostart. Id say your also running a bit rich. Also take your air filter cover off, What size is the opening??

Good luck mate we will get you up and running :D

If you don't have the copper washer on the plug it will cause the fuel bubbles you mentioned and you'll loose compression. Did you change over fuels when you went to 15% or s that what it always ran? If the car was running 20% previously and now it's on 15% then your probably running rich. Check your idle settings and go back to factory settings and lean from there. Make sure to set the hsn first. I never did mess with my lsn much at all on my 3.0.http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMVE0&P=6#partsusage This is the rotostart and it will make your life so much esier.

are you priming it before you try to start it? If the pullstart is hard to pull you are flooded. try to get all the fuel out of the carb and out of the fuel line. Then gently blow into the pressure line that fits on the muffler until you see the fuel travel through the line to the carb and then do not try to prime any more. at the most give it a few pulls and then if nothing cover the muffler outlet with your finger for a few pulls and then try some more. But the pullstart should not be very hard to pull.

At eight tanks you probably aren't fully broke in yet. The engine will loosen up a little more over time and become easier to start.
