Hey geardigger,
I have been watching your posts. After seeing the pic of the backplate, I don't think that is your problem. I hope I am wrong. You seem like you are ready to give up. Don't. It is well worth it after ya get it going. Savage is a great truck.
My backplate is broke in the same place. Runs great. The bolt hole that is broke just holds the rotostart on. The 4 center bolts hold the plate to the engine. If ya had an airleak there, it would be the o-ring or the backplate cracked. Don't think the backplate would be cracked.
After reading your first post, it sounds like it is running out of fuel? If the backplate doesn't cure it:
Replace the fuel lines. Even a pinhole would cause problems.
Check the fuel fittings on the tank, especially the one going to the carb. Make sure nothing is in the tank that would stop the fuel from going through the fitting. Take the muffler line off the tank and make sure you can blow through it, with air coming out the carb line.
Check the fuel fitting on the carb, make sure it is tight.
If you have to, take the carb off and take it apart and clean it. I fought with one of these glow engines for a good bit and finally found a very small piece of grass in the carb.
The first post I read you said it would rev up considerably and then quits. That has got me thinking it is running out of fuel. I know you have plenty of fuel in the tank, but sounds like it isn't getting to the engine.
Think I saw in one of your posts that you were putting the bigger air filter on it. Don't forget you will have to set the needles richer. The stock air cleaner doesn't let much air through the carb. It surprised me how much richer mine had to be.
These little engines are a pain. If ya know someone that is good on tuning, let em look at it. 2 heads are better than one. Most of all don't give up. Let us know what fixes it.
