How to set spur gear mesh?

Ok, here we go.. I got the 47 metal, worked great, so far no problems with the slipper, and man, she was doing great.. about 5 tanks into her and I had it running like a scolded dog! Then the inevatable. The clutch bell housing stripped out. I'm talking ripped it to shreds. So now what I'm wanting to do is loose some low end torque. I think that I'm using so much torque with the upgraded tires that I'm killing the cb. I went ahead and ordered a 18 tooth vented one. This will give me less on the low and more on the high right?

It'll work....for a while. If you're going through plastic spurs that fast, you have a problem that will only be temporarily fixed. In the end, metal gears will still wear out....the only difference will be the cost of repairs and maybe a little longer run time. Plenty of guys on here have either larger engines or modified engines and get gallons of use on stock plastic gears. When I first had my Rustler, I was pretty bad at setting my mesh, now I've had the same gear on it for 3 different engines. I think you should do a complete tear down and really inspect every part of the truck, if it all looks good, it may be time to dig into the transmission.

Remember when I said it would be a temporary fix, I'm willing to bet that there is still something wrong. Plus the fact that if you run hardened steel spur gears, you need to run hardened clutch bells.

I ordered the HPI spur, and the one I stripped out was a stock one. I knew it would open up a new problem, but why am I ripping gears apart?

I don't know if this will help any, but I had a problem going through sg after sg and I noticed that the teeth weren't broken, but melted sort of. I also noticed that my cb was turning blue. I took the cb off to find out that my cluctch shoes were worn to crap and was causing slipping, which caused the cb to heat up and caused the spur to melt/break. I was going through them 2 and 3 at a time and only getting about a tank out of each one if I was lucky. I replaced the clucth shoes, set the mesh and havent had a spur gear problem since. Just something to think about if you haven't checked it already.
