Maybe it was one of those "i dropped a 100lb weight on it, and it turned black and was gonna fall out anyway". My dad, working in the construction field all of his life has grossed me out a couple times when he hit his thumb with a hammer (not very often, but damn was it nasty). The pressure would build up under the thumb nail and it would hurt so bad, he drilled a hole in it with an 1/8" drill bit to relieve the pain... talk about nasty... i couldnt bring myself to do that...
