Hi! Was just wondering how much use an experienced nitro user can expect to get out of a new trx 2.5 engine! just purchased my 2nd engine. only 2 gallons on last engine. Want to learn more before i install next engine. Thanx
 
They should go for 4-5 gallons. As long as they're not overheated. Any 2.5 I've ran pretty much needed to be overheated to make any power, though. I've got right around 2 gallons through my latest used one. It had a loose pinch when I got it and still runs decent. Just a dog.

do you think the 3.3 will last longer than that?......I'm up to about 4gallons now and my engine still seems strong!! I've never seen temps over 258.
 
Other engines like o.s.' and piccos are much more durable and easier to tune. A picco takes at least a gallon to break in. 3.3's last longer than 2.5's because they're not so under powered. Though I've heard some bad stories about 3.3's coming apart. Mounting ears breaking off and such. Rods busting, ect... My buddies has been an awesome mill, though.

thanx for the info man......i'll let yall know how long my 3.3 lasts
 
check out the LRP 18. its got loads more power than the 2.5 or the 3.3 and a little more than the OS18. they also hold a tune WAYYY better than the traxxas motors(but what doesn't?) and you can get it for like 120 new!
 
How you drive the car will have an effect on duration, as well. If you are constantly WOT, then of course the engine will let go sooner than if you putted around with it, only gassing it to show off now and again. :)
 
Yes let me know how long that 3.3 lasts for you i was thinking about going w/ that one but i got such a good deal on this 2.5 i went for it. i mostly just put around no racing also was thinking about upgrading my wheels to the 3.8size but that would probably need more power?
 
I'm not sure id switch to bigger tires with a 2.5 and i would never put the traxxas 3.8 tires on it,my stockers never even lasted me a week,they are super soft and made my maxx super tippy,not to mention at top speed they would grow to about 4x there size wich would make it very unstable on hard surfaces........but thats just my opinion!!!
 
yeah, my rear wheels got a little sand in them and theyre a litle out of balance guess it got in through the 2 holes in the rim? theyre glued on tight so i can't get them off to clean them. a new set of 3.8 tires and wheels are only 30 bucks on ebay so i thought id just do that!
 
you could also mess around with the gearing a bit to get the torque you want plus lower gearing will put less strain on your motor for gettin them wheelies and take off torque thus it wont rev as high all the time and prolly last you longer in the process!
 
I've gotten 3 gallons through my USED 3.3 and it still runs fine....I've overheated it more than a few times also...
 
A 3.3 will last over 4 gallons tuned correctly. Mine still had the same compression at 4 gallons as it did at 1 gallon. The key to making it last is bearings, at 4 gallons you are at the point of crankshaft vibration due to worn out bearings. After 1 gallon of fuel pull the stockers out, they are cheapos and buy some Boca bearings. Ceramics would be a plus but not necessary.
The engine will last longer, run cooler and hold a tune better with good quality bearings. I guarantee it. The TRX mills turn a LOT of RPMs, 40K on cheasy bearings is a recipe for disaster. I pushed it at 260-280 for 4 gallons on the stockers. I was surprised it lasted that long.

Just google bocca bearings. Nothin' hard about it. Know the size of your bearings? If not , google that too. Or find an exploded view of the engine.
 
Geez. I've had my t maxx 2.5 for almost 5 years and I haven't replaced a single part cept a few ez start gears, glow plugs, and I replaced my first spur gear a few weeks ago. My engine is stock and it has at least 10 gallons of fuel through it and it runs fine. It's over heated a lot too

Sometimes you get a gem. That's a 2.5 that'll be worth rebuilding.
