I just got a mini-t yesterday from a guy here on the forums I got a new battery for it and stuff. It is FUN but anyway when it ran down it was so hot i couldnt even hold the battery in my hand is this normal? Its a NIMH 7.2 6 cell. And I almost burnt myself on the cooling fins or whatever it is on the receiver. Sorry This is my first electric.

The packs normally get fairly warm when running hard outside especially in 95+ degree weather but not that hot for sure. Gearing? Batteries? Motor? wire guage?

I have no idea. I am COMPLETELY new to the electric scene. Someone wanna help me out? The motor is a EPIC thats all I know, and the battery is a losi 6 cell NIMH.

The one thing that pops to mind is gear lash. Check the mesh, and make sure the pinion/spur rotate freely. That would be the #1 cause of over heating. My 18B came with the mesh set super-tight... I adjusted it to how it should be, and the speed practically doubled.

Other than that, it might be over geared. Count the teeth on the pinion, and get one that is 2 teeth smaller.

I think it probably is to tight I will check that when I get home. Thanks.

It seems to be the right mesh. Still getting pretty hot though. I can hold the battery in my hand after the run but its deffinitly hot!

I used my temp gun on the battery, motor, and cooling fins here are the results after a run.

Motor - 180 F
Battery - 170 F
Cooling fins - 140 F

Are these normal temps? It gets so hot I can smell it...

Those temps are WAY too hot. A very normal symptom of being overgeared by at least 3-4 teeth.

My rc18t gets really hot after runs. I have an epic motor in it now(will be in it maybe another 2 days due to my new mamba). It all gets really hot. I know my battery is hottest after charging it, I just don't know about not being able to hold it.

Maybe downsize to a smaller pinion gear? I am running a RC18T pinion on my mini-t because I couldn't find a "mini-t" pinion that I liked and they all had 1mm hex grubs, the RC18T that I had laying around I believe is a 2.5 grub, but it's been a while since I've looked at it. I did have to space out the spur gear so they meshed evenly though.

When I was running my stock electronics I never had a problem with the fins on the esc ever getting hot, if you're running the stock gear.

My nimh packs never get hot charging them, always charge them slow!!! Also let them cool down after charging before running them and before re-charging.
