How do I find out how to properly maintain my used Tmaxx that I just bought? Like I have no idea if the diffs need cleaning and fluid?? I don't know if I'm supposed to do anything with the tranny etc.?
Extremely new to RC but I'd like to learn the truck inside and out. But if I'm going to do it, I gotta do it right.

I found that the best way to learn about your truck, is to completely tear it down. Get a copy of the manual handy, some tupperware trays, and a good clean area to work on. Rebuild it from scratch, cleaning & inspecting all parts for damage/wear. Replace any parts that need upgrading, as per recommendations by members. It may sound a bit nerve racking, but the TMaxx is actually one of the easiest trucks to work on. If you happen to run into a problem/question, RCNT is here for ya.. I know some members dont like to admit it, but we've all owned Tmaxx's at one time... lol I still have my original Maxx that was converted to a .21.
Good luck

Just some FYI, t-maxx diffs use grease only. They aren't sealed so you can't use diff oil. Also, the trans gears shouldn't be lubed with oil. They run dry.

Keep an eye on your axle bearings. They have a tendency to give out. I'd keep 4 or so on hand. Also, keep a few shock towers and sets of bulkheads on hand.

If you don't have a manual or parts explosion, you can get them here:

Do you know if you have the 2.5 maxx or the old .15 pro maxx?

I would strongly advise against doing any structural upgrades to it, in my opinion. Lower braces, chassis, arms, ect. Simply because it can get so expensive. Keep it stock and keep it cheap.

Just keep a few extra spare parts, and replace them when need be. You'll be happier in the long run.

If you are really planning to bash the truck, see about getting something a little tougher than a t-maxx. Say for instance, a savage, or a revo.

All the BS aside, the t-maxx is fairly maintanance free.

Just use after-run oil after EVERY run, and when something doesn't sound right/act right shut the car down and check it out.

One more very important point is to invest in a Failsafe. It's cheap insurance. If your batteries get too low, or the signal goes out of range, it kicks in and stops the car instead of it running away at a really fast pace.

I have the 2.5

The truck has alum. bulkheads, front and rear skid plates, looks like the chassis sides are alum.
All the electronics are stock. Looks like there are some steel gears as well.

the stock diff gears are steel....are you reffering to the tranny gears being steel??...the Aluminum BH are a nice hop up to get, that's one of the weakest points on the T-maxx.......

he's probably talking about the spear gear/clutch bell.I remember when I first got my 2.5 maxx I tore the whole truck down even though the seller said he took very good care of it.come to find out he only cleaned from time to time.and he worked for a hobby store.the diff's where shot p/s was spent but it ran shock's where blown I got lucky that the Trans was good.oh and you would think since he worked at a hobby store he would help me out on the price's "NOT".he said I did the damage! I just said oooh..... ok I see how it is

Sounds like you have a pretty good start already!

Drop in the pro-line steering and a hitec 645mg servo for steering and you will have tons of fun.

As for the steel gears, what are you talking about? The trans or spur? Just curious.

I don't know what gears. Sorry, just learning. I'll have to cross reference to the manual. You can see them just sitting there. Not covered. I do see that the dude who sold me the truck has all his replaced parts in a bag for me. There is a set of gears that are plastic laying in the bag. I'll have to find out what they're properly called.

I also noticed that he replaced the exhaust. He put a Hurricane twin on it. I'll look up the parts when I get a chance so I can talk to you guys a little better. Thanks.

the plastic gears are probably for the tranny.....the ones exposed are the Spur gear (large one on tranny) and the Clutch Bell (CB this is on yur engine and covers your clutch setup).....if he put metal gears in the tranny that's definately a nice upgrade....if you could post pics we might be able to point ou tmore hop ups you've got.....so you don't go buying unneccesary items.......actually just so we can look at another T-maxx.....

Well, I took a look at these gears and I can't for the life of me figure out where they're from. I think the tranny. There is a metal shaft about a 1/2" showing. Then one gear and plastic shaft down to 3 close set gears and then a round metal plate at the end of the gears. There is about 1/4" of the metal shaft showing at this end. Does that help?
