Hey guys.

Is it possible to build your own speaker boxes, put in your own speakers (subs, tweeters, etc) and then hook them up to a reciever to get surround sound? I have aquired some new subs and am thinking I could build a whole system. I have all of the tools/skill requires to build all of the boxes. I just need to know if it is possible. If so, are there wireless recievers available? I would like to not have to run the cables all the way to the back of the living room, although it would be possible. Thanks.

I can't imagine it would be much different from a car stereo box. Go for it!

I figured that. I want to make all of the boxes though for front, right, left, rear, etc... Just want to get your opinions.

Dont be fooled, there's a lot of engineering that goes into the higher end speaker boxes.. You could make your own, but they would be sub par to say an already engineered setup...

Make sure you build the speaker boxes to specs. Also what ohm are the speakers? 8 ohm is the only ones that will sound good. 4 ohm will sound like a tin can. My 1st set of surround sound speakers were a set of Rockford fosgate 15's (8 ohm) and I bought some normal home theatre speakers for the mids/highs and it sounded, ok. But yeah, it can be done.

Yes.

You design the enclosure (mostly for bass response), pick your drivers, and the design the x-overs. Generally speaking a sealed enclosure is quicker and more accurate and a ported enclosure is louder and more efficient.

now going wireless is prob way out of your price range. it would be way easier to run cables thru the wall then paying the money for a wireless system that would be any decent. I install TV's, Audio, Video conferencing equipment and all sorts of stuff for commercial buyers. We don't do anything residential bc it is a whole different ball game but i know a couple people that do. I would suggest getting a nice reciever and maybe running wire thru the walls or just get a nice rug to hide most of them under. Is this on the bottom floor or the floor right below the roof?

On the speaker boxes i would just look up specs on boxes! It's hard to make em look good and be the right sizes and all. I would suggest maybe finding a kit online that have been made and all you have to do is add the speaker, but when it really comes down to it i would just shed the cash for a decent set of JBL's or something of the like.

my best friend works for legacy home audio (not the crappy car audio) if you have any ?'s let me know I will run them by him and see what he says, he is or was and now finished making a set of rears for is setup http://www.legacyaudio.com/ he runs the focus in fronts and center and has the custom rears that he built in the shop this past summer

time, materials and end results save your money and buy a nice set it will look better and sound better,as imbroken stated there alot of r&d that goes into a design that is if your looking into high end
