Hey guys I have been working on tuning this Stampede I got as my 1st go at R/C's and I have been searching and reading about tuning the engine b/c when I got it it was blowing tons of raw fuel out of the exhaust.

So I get out the traxxas 2.5 manual and take it to 2.5 revs and notice temps pushing 300F...so I back the HSN all the way back to 4.5 revs where it still runs 290ish if I push 0-3/4 trottle around the yard for 5mins or so

at 4.5 revs the engine blows some raw fuel out of the exhaust but not nearly what it was when I got it... The smoke is thick and burns the eyes like i'd imagine tear gas would...Idle is like 210F or so

at 3-4 turns it runs extremely strong and will damn near turn a backflip but the temps are once again up around the 300F mark still plenty of blue smoke and no other signs of overheating...Idle is about 220F or so

I have done some searching and I want to check for air leaks and I think I will eventually upgrade the cooling head...the truck idles smooth, doesn't bog, has blue smoke and never cuts out (unless you go greater than 5 turns and if you go full throttle at 2.5 turns which I know that means it was too rich and too lean respectfully)

Last question...about how long should a tank of nitro last (i know size matters but its the reg. size tank thats on a stampede) mine goes for like 10 mins or so...

Thanks

1. 2.5 motor's always run really hot. But you should not be runing 300. What it sounds like to me is your lean on your low speed needle. Heres what I would do, richen the lsn, about 1 half a turn, then on the hsn lean it out a quater. Give some take some. Also what does the bottom of your glo plug look like, it will tell you alot about the truck, dark=rich, shinny=lean.
2. 10 minutes on a tank sounds good, I belive your tank in the stampeed is smaller then most monster trucks, so it sounds about right.

Good luck, and hope it helps a little.

I will try that...is there a stock position for the LSN like the HSN is suppossed to be 2.5 revs out from bottomed out?

I'll play with it sometime this afternoon (when the gf isnt yelling at me about all you wanna do is mess with your R/C car)...

I was trying to follow the instructions that said get the HSN set then move to the LSN then the idle so I will mess with both

Thanks for the input

factory needle settings are 4 on the HSN and flush on the LSN

What type of temp gauge do you have?

its the Duratrax 1...seems to be pretty accurate on everything else (turning the oven on to different temps and it reads the oven surf temps at different places right on or 2-3 degF higher) so I assume its accurate for the engine as well...

haha nah shes great its just cuze the 1 i am building for me isnt ready yet (see project digger) so I'm playing with this 1...she drove it the otehr night and had a good time till she wacked the tree and busted a front shock then she felt bad...

Thanks a lot Byson I adjusted it to level it was almost all the way in (I'm guessing that lean) and my temps dropped off a lot hitting like 230-240 which is a lot better still a touch high but not the 290 I was getting

Is it possible to pull off the idle screw and plug it with a hex cap...I can not find the idle needle anywhere and I dont have a ref for this
