  1. Bashing
another spur gear question i know but this is a troubled spot on my SS w/.32 surefire i have gone through 5 spurs now.i have re set my mesh with the note paper trick i have checked all the screws every time out and when I'm done bashing. this is what i do bash no racing no track just good ol back yard fun.i dont mind replacing something if it breaks due to hard knocks but this spur thing is driving me crazy.the motor mount I'm using is fully adjustable, i think it is a nova i have removed the motor each spur replacement to make sure everthing was alright,i dont have this problem with any of my other trucks.

how is the clutchbell wearing? how much play is in it? have u checked the bearings in it?

clutch bell looks fine changed the bearings today along with the spur and it
lasted a 1/2 tank

How does the spur look? Are the teeth getting ground off? Is the back of the spur melted from the slipper?

Higher HP engines cause the slippers to slip an excessive amount. This heats up and melts the plastic and will cause spur wobble. The wobble will make it chew up teeth.

I ran an OS 21 RG in my savage for 12 gallons with the original spur. It's a lower HP engine though.

If you're roasting spur gears left and right, your slipper is too tight. Make sure it is set to 1/2 turn from fully locked down. It will slip a little, but the truck will still get up and go fast. This will also protect the rest of your drivetrain from damage, as well.

Also check to make sure your brakes are not dragging at all. You want _ZERO_ drag when the truck is neutral.

you know i though the slipper might be the issue but the LHS said to run the nut super tight then back off 1/8 of a turn

My buddy with an OS .30 had a lot of the same problem, went with a steel gear and hardened clutch bell. No problems since.
With a .32 I'm sure you're well over 4hp, that's a lot for a plastic gear. May be something to consider.

yes i have been thinking of the metal stuff but most say to stay with plastic so the weak point would be the spur and not the drive train i have the RRP kit ready to go but i dont like the way the brass bushing sticks out of the gear were the plastic one has a deeper shoulder do you know if that is normal for the RRP gear to have the smaller shoulder for the bushing?

I run the OS .30 and i had the dual slipper on there for a little while. They make the full kit with everything you need on ebay for around 15 bux. The only problem is that is wobbles more than a single slipper setup. (which i went back to)

I was chewing up spurs on a regular basis with the dual slipper and i couldn't figure out why. The nova mount is useless for one. I had one and its just way too much hassle to try and get perfect and its more prone to wiggling. I also had a dragging clutch bearing that was heating up my clutchbell. I ended up pulling the mount and replacing it with a stock one, went to a single slipper, and replaced my clutch bearings. I have right under a gallon on this spur and it looks the same as it did the day i put it on.

you know after havin to change the spur gear so much the mount does seem to be a hassle to use its the first time i used one so you live and learn. i have the stock mount and a new x ss mount i will now play with them a bit and see what happens,i read somewere else that the dual slipper wobbles a lot.when i replaced this last spur gear i changed the clutch bell bearing with it just to make sure and the dang gear roasted 1/2 tank into it if i kept the truck at about 1/2 throttle it was ok but the first stab of the throttle she smoked it
