ok I'm in a cooler environment close to the freezing point... I'm currently running an hpi R5 cold plug and no matter how i tune the truck it still gets hot it runs at 230-250F when its rich almost sounds like a 4 stroke rich when pinned full throttle when i throw away my temp gun and start tuning it start to pull wheelies but temps ramp up to 280-300F... also after i let off the throttle the engine sounds like its leaning out very much like the sound when u pinch the fuel line and the engine revs up and kinda does that 2 stroke ding ding sound lol... I've pulled the plug out and the plug body is wet from oil and the element looks new still signs of a near perfect tune (so I've read) but HIGH temps in such a cold environment and while using a cold plug...(even when i use an O.S. No.7 med hot plug runs the same).... please i need tips... this is the second engine :S ugh lol and I'm getting tired of throwing money at it... thank you in advance for for info

If its a new engine send it into hpi and they should help you out. If its an older engine I would highly recommend that you seal the engine. There's a video on youtube on how to do that and there also is a sticky on here to help you out. If you want to check your needles the high speed should be 1.5 turns past the groove at the most. The low speed should be at most a half turn in from flush and hpi does not recommend adjusting the mid range needle. I was having a problem over heating and I sent it to hpi where they found a defective carb and I was missing a gasket on my hsn. After i got it broken in I had the leaning out issue after a high speed run so sealing it helped me out there. Hope this helps Steve.

You just need to seal the engine..the 5.9 has also been famous for not running very well. start with sealing it though

it is a new engine but definitely should be broke in by now... i dont really want to send it to HPI because i live in ontario canada and dont wanna send it all the way to cali but ill prolly do that as a last resort... as i mention lol this is the second engine and i came with a new carb i had these same problems with the first engine until the piston skirt decided to fail and kill the engine lol sooooo when i have the HSN 1.5 from the groove its runs rich and wont shift and is very slow and 4 stroke sounding LOTS of smoke when i start going a little past the 1.5 turns it starts to shift and get power and wheelies but then gets hot and sounds LEAN when i release full throttle and the truck wants to start moving on its own because RPM is high.... i did read about sealing the engine... I'm gonna have a look at that and do that tonight if my gf will stay out of my hair lol... one more thing i think i should mention is that i had to replace the mid range needle because it has fallen out and i couldnt find it... in the book it says flush and thats where i have it but also if i take the back pressure line off the exhaust pipe and blow into it to push fuel to the carb sometimes fuel come out of the mid range needle I'm guessing that means that the seal might be shot... i do have another seal i can put on it... i guess that might help.... and again thank you for any tips/tricks you have to offer

Wow these k5.9 sounds like they are real Wieners....i mean winners...... I have hear dterrible stories on them, I'm glad i didnt buy the new XL now

Yeah as weird as it sounds... my savage runs hotter in cooler weather... and the tuning is horrible in cold temps because its like very sensitive while tuning slightest turn the whole tune is messed up... usually the truck runs sooo much better around 70 f or maybe 60 but under i have lots of trouble.

I used the blue gasket maker and some green slime to seal my engine. Also make sure you clean the parts of oil prior to applying the sealant. If you're missing the seal then that might be your problem.

I tried sealing mine with peanut butter and man that was a mistake! Crunchy Jiff in the bearings is bad news.
But seriously your tuning window is much smaller on a cold day with nitro engines. That is why I bought a couple electrics so I can not have to worry when it gets cold out. I have three engines to break-in but may have to wait until spring to do it. Now if you were staying around 250 I would let it go as long as I was getting a smoke trail and call it good. I know it's a pain.

Thank u everyone... I'm not missing the seal on the mid range.. I do have a replacement seal for the mid range that I'm gonna put on hopefully that will help and I didn't get a chance to check for other leaks last night I'm did finally gonna do that after work today but if sealing the B**** doesn't help I'm gonna send both engines to hpi and hopefully they fix both of them for me then I can run dual engines on my savage lol thanks everyone for the pointers... Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

I'm curious since its such a large motor would its normal running temps be higher than 250 f ? I'm wondering if the same warning temps should be the same for all nitro engines ? I've never really looked into that. but yeah its just weird, took my truck out today and the same thing as i said before it ran hotter when it was about 55 60 out and i even have my window cut out. but tuned it to run around 224 230. then my air filter came off but fortunately the sudden huge air flow stalled it.

TRX most of my BB engines run the best at the 240-250 range. You can pretty much say all nitro engines need to stay below the 270 mark unless the engine maker has something that says differntly.

Ahh alright, just was curious if normal temps on different sizes. i just like to abide by the instruction booklet. so when it said 250 i just never let it go over just something i always like to follow.

Its the newer savage x 4.6 on the manual it shows the 250 mark and right after that it shows an exclamation mark with lines and an x. So far it seems to run nicely at 230,240 around there. i have the perfect amount of smoke no bogging or sluggish so i feel that thats fine. Just like with my real car i feel running cooler is always better its just that much less stress and everything isnt at its limit. To me running upwards of 270 is running the engine at its limit and pushing it so i think I'm ok on running lower temps.

i would not seal the engine until after you send it back. sealing the engeine may void your warrenty since you are not a authrized service dealer.just like a tv or sterio you open it no more warenty.

You can't compare these engines with the one in your real car. These engines are designed to turn thousands more rpm than a real car engine. I usually run mine between 260 and 270. The reason they run hotter in cooler weather is because cold air is denser and more oxygen rich than warm air causing it to run a little on the lean side. Try richening your hsn a little in colder weather to compensate. The more fuel you can get running through it the cooler it will run.

I wasn't really comparing it to my real car i was saying i like to keep them running cool like i do with my real cars... reason being is because engines just last longer when not having to run at high temps... The higher the temp the more stress when cooling from 270 down to out side temp when sitting.... the higher the running temp the more likely you are to wear your engine out alot faster compared to running at 240 250..

As long as I am between 230-260 for my normal running temp I am happy. I agree a constant 270 is not what I would like to see but if it edges up there I don't freak out just richen up a hair and keep rollen.

Been running at 270 for well over a year now. I havent noticed any signs of premature wear on the engine and still running strong.
