Hello,

I just got a new HPI RS4 3 SS with the 12RSS engine and I can't get it to run properly. I have adjusted every screw for hours and I get nothing. The best I can get it to do is idle fine and rev up a little bit. But if I give it more than 1/4 throttle it will stall. Sometiems it will stutter a little bit then if I let off the throttle it will calm down at idle.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or what I have to adjust to get it to work.

Thanks

Brad

r u breakin it in the way the manual says to. you should'nt be playin with carb settings until the 5th or 6th tank. try resetting the carb needles to default and make small adjustments from there.

I have tried resetting to factory settings, and I am trying to break in the engine according to the manual. I am also on about the 5th tank of fuel too.

But with the seetings at default the car wont move. If I give it too much throttle it will stall out. and thats with hardly any throttle at all. I can't drive the car at the slowest speed possible without it stall out before I drive the car back to me.

Any more ideas?

Thanks again,

Brad

it sounds like its way to rich. try to lean the top end needle some but not much. will it rev up if you hold the car off the ground?

could it be the clutch is ingaging to early? check it to make sure nothing is broken there.

I am from Grand Rapids Michigan.

If I lift the car off the ground, the tires dont spin. They will if I give it a little bit of gas though.

There is fuel spitting out the tail pipe. I have tried leaning it out, but it doesn't seem to make much of a noticeable difference. I even tried making it rich...even way too rich to see what it would do when it was too rich to see if the symtoms are similar, but the the needle screw out about 1-2 turns more than factory, it did the same thing as before. So that might mean it is too rich.

Thanks,

Brad

are u changing the high end or low end ?

i would go to factory settings, and then try 1/2 turn in the low end, and 1/2 turn on the high end, that should start to clear it up some, but note do the adjustments in small adjustments.. once it starts to clear up some

also, depending how loaded the motor is, you may have to pick the car up and let it rev out to piss out the extra gas (sometimes helps leaving the glow plug ignitor on for alitle until it clears up)

Well, I have gotten the car to rev up a lot better now with only a minor stutter. What I did was richen the high end valve by almost a turn now. And I leaned out the low end by about 1/4 - 1/8 turn.

It still will stall out sometimes though, and this last time it stalled and I couldnt get it started again. It would turn over a couple times and then shut off right away. And I could could keep doing that but it wouldnt stay running. So I stopped for a while.

Can anyone explain to me what the engine sounds like or how to tell if the car is running too rich or too lean?

Thanks

Brad

What as easy way to get the 12RSS running good? Swap the carb with an OS 10E carb. I did an tuning was a breeze and it starts with one only a few pulls and runs great.

Is the 10E carb a better perfomring carb or worse?

I dont want to sacrafice performance by saving a little tuning time right now, is the reason I am asking.

Brad

OS is one of the best carbs made. I can't say for comparison to the HPI because I never even tried the HPI carb on my RNS4-3SS. I swaped the carb the day I bought it and went directly from breakin with it. I've never had a problem with OS engines or carbs. I'd suggest trying to find someone locally that has a carb you can try or buy cheap. I wouldn't think one should be hard to come by. They are pretty common and used on all the OS .12 engines. I recently gave one away at our track to a guy having basically the same problem you are having but with an off road truck and he was up and running in about a half hour. I really would suggest finding one to try before you go out and spend any money. Like I said, even a cheap used one, for say about $10, would be no real lose if you don't like it. New ones are TOO exspensive! Don't go out and buy a new one, they cost about $60 and a whole new engine is only about $100 or so!

Ya know that is very interesting. I have the Type SS as well and have had no problems with it at all. The carb holds a tune very well and the engine makes my car really fast. However I wanted a faster engine so I bought a Famtom FR15. Wow am I happy I did so. However the other night I was breaking it in and couldn't get the carb to hold fuel at all. So I switched the carb from my SS and put on my Famtom and it fired right up. I guess I have been fortunate seeing as how a few people have had different problems with the carb. Later

wow i dont understand this problem at all i dn't noe way to fix this. i would say ur running 2 rich but i guess not. i would take it back 2 where u bought it and tell them ur problem and see wut they can do.

I'm sure after 4 1/2 years, he got it figured out. :p:

Look at the date on the posts.

Just messing with ya.
