Well I ran my truck today with my body on, for the first time, and I guess it was moving around alot, and I saw something come flying out of my truck as I did a turn through a dirt patch, and the DAM air filter came flying off in quite a dusty area, it ran for about 10 seconds there while I ran up and plugged the exhaust. And now I dont' know what to do... the engine sounded fine just before I plugged the exhaust but it had no airfilter for about 10 seconds and it was fairly dusty I just did a tight turn through dirt and had it up on 2 wheels, after it cooled a bit, I dumped quite a bit of afterrun oil in I figure it might at least smooth out any crap that got in, I also took the glow plug out and looked into it with a flashlight, and the piston is shiny green, although I tryed turning the flywheel with the glowplug out and I can quite easily, although there is a little resistance at TDC, I didn't think I was supposed to be able to turn it like that with the glow plug out, anyways, what can I do, or what possible damage have I done.? ps its the kyosho mad force, and its near the end of the breakin, I really hoped I haven't screwed myself.

Hey man,

I doubt that you did any real damage with only 10 seconds of exposure. You did the right thing by cutting it off. What you may want to do... is take the mill apart and inspect each part and clean real well. If you did get enough dirt in there to gouge the sleeve you will have to replace it, but even that is not that bad. You will have to repeat the break in procedure again though. There is not much to taking a motor apart so it should not be that bad. When you inspected the mill, was there any dust or dirt residue in the mouth of the carb? If not you are probably ok. Let us know what you find.

Tom

Do what Tom said and GET SOME LIL ZIP TIES FOR YOUR AIR FILTER!!
Suck it up and hit the Home depot...buy the biggest bag you can (what 10 bucks??) and just don't think about wasting em every time you take the filter off put a new zip tie on......you should be able to lift your rig by the airfilter......

Do you have Fry's up there? I get all my zip ties there. Different sizes and colors, you can get 1,000 small sized ones for under $10. Bigger ones aren't that much more. Breaking the mill down should be a good learning experience for ya.

Why you running without your body? That has to be one of the worst things to do in Rc. Right behind not having Zipties on your filter. Is it worth your big investment (the cost of your Rc) to skimp out on a $10 item that could ruin your whole rig?

When you have your glow plug out, it will turn over really easy because theres no resistance with the top of the piston. The air just goes out the glowplug hole. Also like stated above, Id take the head off and and backplate and give it a good cleaning.

It'll be fine if you take apart the mill and clean it. I got so much dirt in my Collari B3 that I took of the carb and looked down and I could see a pile of dirt sitting in the crankshaft. I tore down the mill and cleaned every part, put it all back together, been runnin great since then. I doubt you had that much dirt in your engine, I was in a sand pit so big grains of sand got in there, luckily most of em sat in the crank shaft lol.

i agree. you should be ok. I've had my air filter pop off before as well. Just tear it down and make sure it's good and clean before you run it again. No big deal. The important thing is that you knew enough to stop running it

i was running without the body before becuase I was still breaking it in, just bringing it up from idle, and then back down it slow lazy circles...I cound't have flipped it or anything from what I was doing with it without the body on, anyways I got the thing apart, and everything is shiny as new, its pretty cool to see this thing taken apart also, so i guess iam ok and just went a little overboard, anyways better safe then sorry I guess, Iam going to start putting it back together, wish me luck LOL never done this to an engine this small before

Sounds like your ok, if it was only 10 seconds and you weren't going too fast or anything probably nothin at all got in there. It really isn't too hard to put these engines back together. If its a pullstart becareful with the pullstart, if that spring in there pops out its a PITA to put back in. If you run into any problems just ask away.

Now that it's apart get yourself some liquid gasket (racers seal or Copper RTV) and seal the backplate and carb throat......

Well... long story short, depending on the engine, some will walk through hell and back without much of a problem. Engine of point, OS 21 RG-X.

That was the "short" version.

Long version:

About 3.5 gallons ago (half a gallon after a fresh pinch from OS rocket), my motor saver end cap came off my filter (typical for the old style MS filters) and unknowingly, I drove it around for quite some time. At least an hour. In very dusty/dirty conditions. Normally I maintain my trucks very well, but I was working a lot at the office and I didn't have a lot of time to go over things between weekends. So, when I got home from the 4 hour bash session, I was hot, tired and lazy. I didn't do ARO or even so much as look at the truck as I threw it in the corner for the next weekend.

The next weekend, took it out, charged it up (still didn't notice the filter cap missing), drove 40 minutes to a bash site, started it up and couldn't get it "tuned" right. It just wouldn't run. I only ran about a tank through it and then I noticed the cap was missing... and the filter was caked with the red clay/dust from the previous weekend. So... I threw it in the trunk, thinking it was totally dead and broke out the buggy to beat it until I went home.

It was a Saturday, so again, I ignored it until Sunday, delaying the inevitable. Sunday I washed it in the shower to get all the crap off the chassis (really ticks off the wife), then I tore the engine out of it. Pulled off the backplate and about 2 table spoons of actual mud came pouring out of the engine. It was basically just fuel and dirt. The carb had dirt/mud all over in it, the main bearings had dirt/mud all over in it, the sleeve is scuffed all up and the glow plug is junk. So, being the penny pincher that I am, I cleaned it with DA until it looked like new. Oiled the bearings and coated the insides of the entire engine with ARO.

That was about 3.5 gallons ago and it still runs like a champ. Got to love the OS 21 RG's... if for nothing else, their durability is astounding!

This is an engine that I ran 12 gallons through before getting it pinched. This saga happened about 1/2 gallon after the pinch. I recently replaced the main bearings in the engine as they were very shot. But, with the mud in the engine aside, 16 gallons is a lot of fuel through a set of bearings.
