Head Shims

Hey all.
I put a larger heat sink on my 5.9. Now it is leaking around the bottom and upon removing the new heat sink, the brass shim is split. It is about .0065" thick. Can I run with only the 1 steel shim or will this cause some damage or heat problems?

If you liked how it was running before ,you need to use the same thickness shim. Removing or adding shims changes the compression on the engine and can effect how it runs.

Run it for a while, of course playing close attention to the tune. Pull the head back off and if you see pitting on the piston and/or head button then no. You need to replace the shims. If it looks ok and runs good, then don"t worry about it. Shims can be pulled and added based on several factors. Climate, fuel and glow plugs are the big ones.

Thanks for the help so far. Just got the tune right and I tore the spur gear out of the rear diff. I'll re-post on my original thread later.
