Ok, so I got the Lightning RTR. IMO, it's a decent buggy, but there are a few things that need to be added, and other things need changing pretty much right off the bat.

The first thing I did was change the engine and radio. The stock engine is the same as the HPI 21BB, and the radio is kind of lacking. I put my Hyper 21 8 port PS engine in the lightning, and I took the JR XR-2 radio from my backup savage. The HB engine and radio went in the backup savage and I'll probably sell that one since the primary is just about bullet proof now.

Some add ons include an XTM failsafe and an onboard temp gage. I still have the stock servos in the Lightning, but they'll probably get changed out soon.

Back to the need to change stuff. The first and easiest (lol) thing to remedy were the diffs. The diff construction is pretty much strait forward and solid, but they come with grease in them, not oil. The car guru at the LHS suggested changing over to silicone oil, he even gave me some of his personal stash. I put 5K in the front, 10K in the center, and 3 K in the rear. I have not had the chance to run it with the oil in the diffs, but it feels much better on the bench. The diffs have a spider setup, and while cleaning the grease off, all the component look like decent quality stuff.

The second addition to a stock RTR Lightning was front diff case braces. This (IMO) is the biggest weakness to the RTR version. I contemplated bending up some aluminum to serve as a brace, but I had some real doubts as to the actual integrity of the 6061 sheet I have on hand. The LHS guru gave me an old rear brace off of a Lightning, including the metal pyramid ball mount. I looked and studied it, but the rod he gave me was too long. Then it hit me. The brace only handles compression loads, not expansion. Digging in my parts box, I found my stock of savage ball link ends. The large ones could work for a lower brace, and two smaller ones could work for an upper. The big ones are the steering links, and the smaller are the lower shock ends from the savage parts stockpile. I found some steel piano wire that fit (not quite snugly) into the ball ends, and some 4-40 full thread rod that fit perfectly into the smaller ball ends. The final components for this project was the carbon arrow shafts that fit perfectly on both rods. After some careful measuring and cutting, I got the lengths of the steel rods and carbon sleeves just right. The ball ends were threaded onto the 4-40 rod, but the lower brace needed to be JB welded together. After everything was assembled I ended up with what's in the pix below.

If anyone has any suggestions or improvements, let me know. Also, I can post dimensions and a materials list if anyone wants to do this themselves.

If you swapped out the engine and radio right away, why did you get the RTR and not the Pro? The Pro has diff lube, and chassis braces. Althought neither has the upper rod as you have done. Nice work!!

Stupidity, plain and simple. If I had it to do over, I'd have gotten the Pro. But as with everything I have, nothing will go to waste. I'm gonna put the radio in my sailboat, and the engine is going in my old savage, while the engine that was in the old savage (new 21BB) is going in the new one. It's all good.

Thanks for the compliment.

looks real good Whitt. Did you do anything for the rear chassis brace?

also, there is a parts list:

http://www.hotbodiesonline.net/lightparts.htm

the Pro version parts will have a -1 or a -2 at the end. example:

C8075 FRONT SHOCK HOLDER 6061 3mm (LIGHTNING SERIES)
C8075-1 FRONT SHOCK HOLDER 7075 3mm(LIGHTNING SERIES)
C8075-2 FRONT SHOCK HOLDER 7075 4mm (LIGHTNING SERIES)

Not yet Rob, the RTR had the hardened steel diagonal brace already, just not a front brace. The Pro brace set is milled aluminum, right? If the rod is strong enough I'll probably just run it as is, but the front really needed some bracing right out of the box.

I did get to run it yesterday, and all I can say is, WOW! I was screaming around a dirt oval with some long straits and banked turns, and I was diggin it bigtime. Fast doesn't really paint a good picture.

What would a 16T CB do on it with they Hyper 8?

Whitt...

try it man. hehe. you'd have some pretty insane top speed. In my case, I'm more interested in acceleration.

I used to run the 16T on the Hyper when it was in the Savage. I got one of the good Hypers, reliable and powerful. I might try it, but I gotta learn to drive that buggy first, then I gotta find a big enough place to run it. But good God, I can't imagine what it'll be like with a beefier gear. If I put it on, I'll be sure to tell yall what it was like.

I just switiched to a 15T on my 8-port. Nice mix of low-end acceleration and top end.

i love my pro.. came in 1st the other night with 8 port race and 16t cb.. the picco i have will be going in it for this weekend, too much for my poor ol savage, and ill throw a 17t cb on it to see if it will clear the back table at my track.. almost was with 16t...

Hey CRS....a few of us NEOHIO guys are going to Browns hobby this friday to check out the track.

some new parts to fit your lightning.. to bad they are made by gs... :smoke:

5.jpg

A stock rear spring
B GSC68024 (long) happens to be same as front spring
C stock front
D GSC68022 (med)
E GSC68020 (short) need 2 packs fo these

basically each pack is 5$, comes with 6 springs, soft, med, hard spring, it is so you can build a duel rate spring system for your lightning.. it comes with a plastic coupler between each set of springs, get 4 spares even

more pics..

Nice setup CRS, Why did you say too bad they're made by GS? Smaller diameter or something? Noone here runs the storm and the LHS doesn't stock the parts, but I can get them to order them. Thanks.

its more of a on this forum the gs owners piss off the lightning owners, or get pissed when things like a lightning is said to be better.. so hence "too bad its a gs part" commint :shhh:.. they fits the lightning.. cause thats whats pictured..

Cool. I don't really like the whole Ford/Chevy "debate" kind of thing. If it's got 4 wheels and screwms, it's cool by me. Hell, I'm running heli parts, CEN TC stacked springs and Traxxas rims on my savage. Am I pureist? Nope. But if it works, it works. It's all good.
