...done a power slide on dry blacktop with a monster truck wearing ProLine Road Rage tires on Velocity Six wide offset rims?
Well, I have.
Today was a banner day that started off crappy with respect to my new Savage. Easter was great; just the RC part was a bad start with an awesome finish.
Decided to kill a couple of hours by finishing up the break in and attempt to dial in this new Hyper. Tank #5 sucked...it was spitting fuel like a pornstar and it was running like a backfiring VW bug. Tried everything between tank 5 and 6 to get the engine in line...richened it, leaned it, changed the plug, loosened the plug, everything...talk about painful. Half of tank 6 ended up going through the engine without a real light off.
I decided to say screw it and took a break. During the break I took all of my plugs, new and slightly used, and gave them a denatured alcohol bath. Cleaned them up nice and good. I also decided to take the truck back to factory presets on all of the needles and then lean it from there.
The rest of tank 6 went sort of like tank 5 without a lot of the backfiring. Tank 7 was a completely different story. I started with the HS needle at 4 turns out. Fired it up and went immediately to WOT to blow out whatever crap was causing the backfire effect. Cleared the pipe and went into tuning. Finished tank 7 at HS needle set to 3 and a quarter turns out from seated. The Savage was starting to impress me.
Tank 8 went from HS needle at 3 and a quarter CCW to 2 and a half out from seated. Now we're talking...this thing was turning the tires on the blacktop...it was loading down the back end like crazy and fishtailing...it was ready for the test. Finished the tank and let it cool down.
Tank 9....the play tank. Went out in front of my court where there is a nice long stretch of straight away. The danger is avoiding the occassional 1:1 coming home from shopping, but the street is otherwise not real busy. Cranked the Hyper up and did some slow speed runs to see how the control was at range. Then commenced the sprints. Thanks to my suspension set up I never got any wheelies, but the back end compressed to the stops and the front was just barely making contact...enough for steerage and just barely so. Then the chance to run down some 1:1s entering the development presented itself. Average speed through the neighborhood is about 25mph; I had to actually apply brakes to avoid under-running some of the 1:1s I was chasing. Next came the powerslide test....full speed WOT let off the gas and throw in full turn to one side or the other, then slam on the gas. First time, got a full 360, without tipping, just plain sliding. Second time, got the 180 I was looking for. The rest of the tank went through doing power slides and drawing an audience.
I'll say this...my T-Maxx doesn't stand a chance. Pirata's stock Savage...no chance.

I do have some concerns. The engine never got hotter than I could touch with bare skin. There was always plenty of smoke. I feel I could have taken the needle settings to under 2 turns CCW without much difficulty. My problem is that it bogs like a big dog at the factory recommended settings. It runs great lean, but...
How lean is too lean for the Ofna Hyper 21 8-port? Am I gonna f-up this engine by running at the 2 and a half turns CCW that it is set at now? No, I'm not buying a temp gun...this thing was warm to the touch after tank 9. Not worried about the temps. Any thoughts?
Next, the break in tanks 3-6 compressed the coil on the first long plug...is that bad? I thought it was a result of the break in requiring a really, really, really rich setting...but anybody with a different story please enlighten me.
Sorry about the long post...I just had to share. It was an awesome sight to see...Now to put the offroad tires back on and find some rough terrain to smoke... =devil
