These is a screw called the ideal screw it sounds like you need to turn it in a little then adjut your trim. To adjuct your ideal this is what you do:
Take your airfilter off. close the carb all the way, find the ideal adjust screw, it should be behind youe HSN and it should have a spring looking thing around it( All mind do)
slowly turn it in intill your carb is about 1.5 to 2 mm open

bigpic, it sounds like you bought the rig used without a manual. Most manuals give instructions on how to set everythign back to factory settings. This allows you to set up the rig from scratch and tune it they way you want it.

The idle screw may be only half the problem. If you are running to lean your idle may stay high even if you turn down the idle screw. Best thing to do is get all the carb settings back to factory settings and then see if you still have the problem. I am not familair with HPI products and service but many times the manufacturer's websites have downloadable owner's manuals. Check with HPI's website. Or call their customer service and see if they will send you one no charge.
