I'm looking at getting a GWS slow stick as something to fool around with. From what I've read in the 2-3 articles I've seen they are really easy to fly, really easy to maintain and really cheap.

I've never had an airplane so the easier the better - this is just something for me to mess with around the park and to see if it's even something I care to dig further into later on.

So what do you guys know about the Slow Stick? Good, bad? Where's a good place to pick one up at?

HobbyTown carries it.
You still have to get the 'flight pack' which is the battery, ESC, and sub mini Rx. I THINK it came with micro servos for the elevator and rudder but I don't remember. I do know that it's not ready to fly out of the box.
On a day with absolutely no wind, you can get off with a rolling take off. It takes a very gentle touch, since too much up elevator will stall it immediately since they have such a small motor.
Since they move so slowly they are VERY difficult to control in even the slightest breeze, so you're better off flying them at a good altitude above trees.
They're light enough to float and thermal when you cut power.

They have a great reputation as a gentle park flyer. And you can usually rig them with little investment. Keep the stock drivetrain. Just get some light batteries and some 8 or 9 gram servos. And a micro receiver and you should be set. I'm still considering getting one just for putting around the park with. My other planes are a bit too fast for small parks.

Buddy of mine let me fly his once. You could almost keep up with it at a walk. Well, maybe not that slow. Nice flying aircraft. One of those for a calm day, like Rolex said.

Their Tiger Moth is a sweet flier too. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHCJ9&P=SM I've seen one of the guys take his off at our grass field. They keep the grass cut pretty short. Just surprised me it would even move on the ground. Most of the time he hand launches it.

The slow stick rocks!! I had one and it was a great flyer and i WISH i had learned how to fly on one as simple too fly as it is. Its pretty tuff for it being just foam and aluminum tubing. You will need a radio reciever, two micro servos, and a battery. They fly very easy and are a blast to play with in the wind when you have a lttle more experince.

I always flew off a HUGE parking lot on weekends and there was also a HUGE nicely mowed lawn attached to it.
Nobody around except a couple of flyers with electric park flyers. In a soft breeze, you could actually keep it airborn while it floated backwards.
I traded it for some kind of 4W Belt driven electric car, and when I got it running, he wanted to trade back. He finally bought it back for cash, and I made out.
