Okay, so this is my second year of hunting and its time to get a gun, i'm hoping to get something along the lines of a 12 gauge shotgun and then get an extra slug barrel so that I can use the gun for all of the things that I hunt for (duck, geese, small game, deer). A buddy of mine said that he has a Remington 870 express and he loves it.
So the question is, what would be the right gun for me, without putting a really big whole in my pocket. Also, what would be the right store to shop at online?

Thanks,
Savon

no such thing as the right gun for anyone. guns are terrible. hunting is terrible. it's not a sport. the animals don't know they're playing. don't buy a gun!

I'm sure everyone will say something a little different, but an 870 would be excellent. Lots of options and parts. And you can shoot rifled slugs through the smooth bore barrel, but you probably have a particular motivation for getting a rifled barrel. Online shopping, can't really help, most stores seem pretty competitive with online pricing, especially when you factor in the FFL fee.

Everyone has their own opinion, right?

Thanks for the help, i've been looking at the 870's and i saw one for $250 brand new, i was just seeing what someone else thought before i spent the money on a gun.

I would look at picking up a Remington 870 super magnum combo package. It comes with a 26" slug barrel, and the 28 in modified barrel. It gives you the option of shooting the 2 3/4" or 3" shell for hunting deer, as well as a 3 1/2" shell for goose hunting. I bought the combo that came with the cantilever slug barrel for mounting a scope. It is a good all around combo and it should give you a versitile hunting and sport gun. Just my two cents.

+1 good choice

I carry the 870 with the extended choke tube onduty. No other mods. I figure if its good enough to shoot people with, its good enough for ducks. HAHA

Nah, i also have one that i own and use it for all kinds of water foul... I love it.

Guns don't kill people. Stupid people with guns kill people.

I have a mossberg 500A it came with a long railed changeable choke barrel and a slug barrel with sights. It will shoot up to 3" magnum slugs. If you can hold onto it that is. It was only about $280. I love it. I'm not sure if they make that exact model anymore. i know a lot of guys were turning them into tactical gums with short barrels and pistol grips.

Thanks guy's, i looked around and i think I'm either going with the Mossberg 500, or the 870 express pump, Just haven't decided yet.

Well using a shotgun with slug is ok for deer if your going to be close range but anything over 50 yards id say you need a rifle.

I've got an 870 express with a 28" barrel. I'm very impressed with it and would recommend it to anybody.

With a good slug barrel you should be good close to 100 yards.

I have an 870 and a buddy has the mossberg, they are very similar and both great shooting guns that can take the abuse of hunting!

Ya but with what you will spend on a good slug barrel your halfway to a decent rifle imo. When I hunt (havent for awhile) I use my Marlin 30/30. I love it. I hunt in dense country too though. No 200-300 yard shots for me. I use open sights. But pretty acurate at 150 yards.

None of these are my gun but it is the same one as in the middle. Synthetic stock and all... Minus the scope although i do have one for it.
