RC Driving Style
Well I got my Savage X 4.6 today & ran the first 2 tanks for break in, then the ran hit from Hurricane Sandy. I did notice that older models had 8 shocks & mine has 4. Is this because they are the big bore shocks?

Here she is!

yes the newer models have 4 big bores, i always ran 8 standards on mine, it seemed to handle better for my driving style, you will love the truck, they are great bashers.

hey i just bought the savage x and I'm having trouble starting it. i have followed all the instructions but it wont start. the engine will turn over but when i take the roto start out it stops. any ideas please let me know

Set your high & low screws back to the default position & check your glow plug. Also check your glow igniter to make sure it's working as well.

Hi fords-350,
The glow plug ignitor that comes included with the Savage X truck is pretty crappy.
Mine only worked once, I tried starting the truck, it fired up, but because I wasn't giving it any throttle from the radio it died. I attempted for several hours, but no go. So I finally took the whole kit back to the LHS and discovered the gpi was hatched. I bought one that is rechargeable with a gauge in its handle.
You have got to love your warranty: Phone hpi on any regular business day, like tomorrow and tell them the included gpi is no good, they will mail you a new one. They sent me a nice one, rechargeable with a charger and it's also got a gauge in the aluminum handle.

Savage X 4.6 Big Block...

Hey I want to thank you for telling me it was the gpi that was screwing things up because i was about to go out and replace the glow plugs themselves. I'm going to call HPI and tell them about it and alert the store that i bought my truck from, but in the event that i need the serial number where do I find it on my truck. I looked on the back of the instruction manual but theres this blank space where the serial number is suppose to be. Any ideas where the serial number is please let me know. fordf-350

Hi,
Although my Savage is an hpi 106364, Special Limited Edition I believe it's serial # is on the frame.
But hpi won't ask you for that. They never asked me anyway. I asked how they wanted me to identify myself. In fact as long as you registered your truck online by email or in included post card, you are already on file at the warranty help centre.
When you call them, they will know who you are, before they even answer, with call display these days... They will verify your mailing address. If your lhs has an hpi brand gpi, and willing to let you have it, it can be replaced directly from them to the store, save you buying one, or having to wait ten days to a couple weeks, else buy one. It's nice to have the freedom to have an extra one fully charged, anyway they don't cost much, and you'll soon have another as well.
I took the battery out of that junk unit and threw the useless gpi in the trash can.

Just a thought:
You better take off the back bumper area of your truck to access and tighten all your screws on the rear motor plate and roto start-plate now. Infact you'll need to pull the motor and remove the roto-start to tighten the motor back plate screws. It's the only way to access them screws.
After all the attemps to start it with no gpi, the roto-start might have shook some screws loose.
Better to be safe than sorry..., if the motor back plate worked itself loose, you'll never get it started anyway with no compression.
Testing a glow plug ignitor or plug is easy, just hold a glow plug against the tip of it and pull back the trigger, if it works at all, it will heat up the plug and it will glow red.
That's also what's nice about the gpi with meter/guage and recharger, you can instantly see what's going on while using them, and you feel more confident that way.

I finally got the new glow plug this past thursday. When I went to start it, it worked and it was great so i burned through the 2 tanks of fuel like it said. but when i went to drive it around after the 2 tanks it stop but the engina kept on running. I believe I found the problem and it's the clutch. when i open the throttle the egine revs up but the Savage doesn't move, I"ve looked on the internet on how to fix it or adjust it but nothing is showing up, if you have any suggestions please contact me about them, thank you

Hi fordf-350,
I was thinking your receiver battery was dead. But if you were getting throttle from your Tx then that likely wasn't it.
I remember one day, hauling my gear over to the nearby J-W church parking lot to do some running, and after starting up thee Savage X, discovered it wouldn't move!!!! Dumb bunny never turned on the receiver, & checked the steering or throttle before I left the home front.
So I had to make the walk of shame, back, ten minutes later.
I've dummied up since though, and already purchased a second receiver hump pack.
Hopefully you too will be back up and running in no time.
As for glow plugs, you might notice four tapped threaded openings in your glow plug wrench. Yes? well those are to store 4 extra glow plugs. Keeps them handy.

Welcome! to Savage world. Am sure you will enjoy your truck.

No the receiver box and remote are fine, I made sure of that because the throttle servo is responsive to the remote, the fly wheel is spinning and when i move the truck on to a stand the wheels will spin slightly cause the clutch is just resting on the flywheel but when i give it some gas the egine revs but the clutch doesn't disengage so there is no movement from the wheels. the spur gear and transmission work fine its just the clutch and I'm wondering how I would fix it or replace it

That link I gave you shows you how to install a clutch. I think the savage X just comes with HPI teflon shoes:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFXU7&P=ML

Or you can upgrade to alloy shoes for better grab:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKSC7&P=ML
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUWJ8&P=7

Either way, just make sure to use some fine grit sand paper to clean the inside contact area of the bell and to rough up the face of the shoes. Also clean all parts with denatured alcohol (or some degreaser of your choice) to avoid excess slip as the shoes break in.

Also probably a good idea to replace the bell bearings. Cheap to buy and you will have it all apart anyway. Whenever shoes are shot, it's usually time to replace the bearings.

I'm looking at it with some other guys who are experts on nitro rc cars. We agreed that the clutch is pretty close to being labeled "destroyed". there is metal past and shavings everywhere below the clutch and muffler. I appriciate you sending me the links (I looked at the new clutches and there for a good price) I will probably buy one of them or go to a local hobby shop. thanks again fordf-350
