Well after a couple of weeks of cold and rainy days mother nature finally started to cooperate. Was 65* and not a cloud in the sky, so I decided to take the revo out and start breaking it in. At this point I am going to tell you how much I am hating the EZ start. Or maybe a new battery and charger are in order because I could have swore the night before it had a full charge but it went dead after about 6 cranks..so on and off the charger all day trying to get it cranked. Now keep in mind I am a newbie when it comes to nitro RC's so it took me a little bit to get it cranked. It finally fired for a split second and was pouring smoke out the pipe. So I leaned the HSN 1/2 turn and had to wait for the battery pack to charge back up. In the mean time I broke out the heat gun and warmed the engine up some and on the 1st crank it fired up and idled..so I put her on the ground and started easing it around the driveway. I got about 2 heat cycles out of it before I had to put it up and get the pit going...drinking Bud Light and grilling some steaks as we speak. But I did notice that when it was moving it had an aweful roar/whine that seemed to be coming from the spur/bell gear area. Does this mean that the gears are not lined up correctly? I have another spur gear coming for it anyways but dont want to trash it just because. Another thing is at what point should I start leaning it out. I read that it is better to keep it on the rich side during break in but whats everybodies thoughts on that?

Yes rich is good, but you want it to be around 200 degrees as well. Check the gear mesh, it sounds too tight. Try a thin piece of writing paper between the gears. Might take a few tries but you'll get it.

Hmmm..how do I go about correcting the gear mesh..seems the motor only bolts up one way. Does the mount itself have some adjustment? And it hit 200* pretty quick both times I cranked it up..matter of fact it was at about 220* both times I caught it and immediatly shut it down. I still have a lot of break in to do but it will be worth it when its done.

The engine should sit at the 220 mark, if it is climbing to that temp fast and then possibly past it, chances are it's too lean. Tune it so it holds steady or you run the potential of damaging it. 200 is the lowest you should run it at as well, 220-240 is optimal as you should run it in at the temps it will be running at once fully tuned.

yeah both times it was at 220 so I shut it down because I am still in the break in process. However the guy behind the counter at my LHS said while its breaking in the temp will flucuate on the high side. However I will richen it up 1/2 turn or so and see what happens next time. Am going to try to run it at least once or twice an afternoon everyday till its broke in.

Let it warm up before you adjust any needles. If it gets to 240, richen it up and watch the temps real carefully. And always put the piston to bottom dead center every time you shut it off. Find where the pistons at its lowest spot with a tooth pick or something else that you won't scratch the piston with. Or drop in the head. Mark the flywheel with a paint marker for a reference point.

Oh it was plenty warm both times :hehe: and everytime I shut it off or had to stop cranking on it because of a dead battery I spun it around to BDC.

Update on my os .21 break in

Well its been a couple of weeks since I have even gotten to mess with my Revo. But I got some free time this morning. And since it was a nice day I didnt want to spend a second inside that I didnt have to so I took the Revo out and finished breaking it in and tuning it with the help of somebody who knows what they were doing..man what a differance that makes...lol. But I am EXTREMLY pleased with my OS.21 ...lots of power..maybe not "big block" power but a noticable increase over the stock 3.3 that came on it. The only other thing I want to do to it is take the spur gear (I think that is what it was) down a few teeth for some better low end. And get some better shocks..or rebuild the factory shocks on it now...not sure what I want to do.

If you take the spur down a few teeth it'll be faster. 15/38 is stock. With all the extra power of a 21 the stock combo should be good. If you still want more low end then try a 40 tooth spur or 14 tooth clutch bell.

DOH!!!!! your right...yeah it has way more low end but I want just a tad more get up and go.

Well maybe I spoke too soon..was out running it today and I must have ran it a little low on fuel or something..anyways it died. I let it cool down...filled it back up and couldnt get the son of a gun started again. I didnt have another plug with me so that may have been the culprit. But dagummit..if its not one thing its another
