I am currently running the Novak Goat system in my AX10 and have it backed up with a DX3R.
What I realised after tackling some near vertical walls is that the drag brake is so pathetic I would call it non existent.
I have it set to profile 8 which is the highest available for the brushless, (13.5%) and it is absolutely useless.
Am I missing something or am I doing it right and it just IS useless.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

The only suggestion that I have give you is something you've already done. Get rid of the brushless and run a cobalt with a mamba max.

What gearing are you running with the goat? We might be able to help things out a little bit, but it's going to be slight and the goat will still be at a huge disadvantage over the other combo.

I really don't like Novak products, I had the orig. brushless crawler system. It released the factory smoke 4 times on me, I stopped using Novak crawler products after that. I would go with a Mamba Max or Sidewinder ESC, I think both are great speed controls for rc rock crawling.

Your fire power is in the mail. ;)

I showed up at my first comp thinkin I was something with my high dollar brushless system, and I couldn't set my rig at the starting gate and leave it there because the incline was too steep for the drag brake. I don't know why they only allow 13.5 percent, unless thats just all that the brushless is capable of holding.

I would tell you what the guys in my crawler club told me the goat was good for, but I might get banned by Woodie lol.

Until you saw the light. A GOOD brushed motor and a Castle or Tekin ESC are the best way to go. IMO :hehe:

After seeing some rigs running mamba max ESC's and Holmes Hobbies brushed motors, I sold both my goats within a week.

I noticed that, as John Robert's handwound motors are going to be impossible to get for a little while, I'm anxious to hear how you like those new handwound 45 turn motors. I'm getting ready to order my berg axles and start developing quite a few parts for the berg comp rig, I'm considering different motor options. I have two 7 turn cobalts and two 35 turn handwound 540 motors on the shelf just for my berg rigs, but I'm also considering other options until John Robert gets some more of his motors into production.

Charlie, how much drag brake are you running with your 7T motor?

I also want to get with you about one of the skids on the build I am doing, they looked nice, and were a lot easier then me having to dig through things to see if I had a piece of Delrin that size.

Depends on the weight and gearing of your rig, or you could just do it the easy way with 100% drag break. What ESC are you using ??

Mamba Max

I am running my drag brake at 100 % with a Cobalt 7 Turn works great and holds the truck well on an incline. You don't get as much drag brake from a bushed motor as you would a brushless motor. That is why I go with 100 % on the drag brake with brushed motors.

I've been running the Sidewinder from day one & love it,get the castle link & your good to go! The programming options are the bomb! You'll need the link when you get the CC BEC too. Like Chip & Charlie said a good brushed motor works very well!

Thanks, I have the Castle Link and all the other stuff that is mentioned here, just haven't gotten it all together yet, (still waiting on the truck) but seems it is in stock most places, and I was on the back order list, so should have it the next week or so.

I have never programmed the CC BEC, is it done through the ESC when you hook the link up?

I run 100 percent drag brake with my cobalt and it works great. Volt up and gear down, I run a 3S LiPo with 10-12 tooth pinion.

Derailed after 3 replies. I guess they really ARE crap. Oh well, as you all know I dont like Novak anyway, just seemed like a good idea at the time.
Pinion 14T and spur 87T (stock). I could go 10T pinion but the spur is on its limit because of the driveshaft. Maybe could try a little larger.
If this system is no good I could just set the drag brake on the brushed profile and see if anything happens.
Not really anything to lose I reckon.....

If I were you, I would run a 12 tooth pinion and set the drag brake to its max settings. Rather than experiment with it to see if you're gonna blow it up, why not sell it on ebay for like $160 or something lol.

You have to have a special Castle Link programmer for the BEC. The Castle Link isn't used with the Mamba Max, it's only used with the lower model ESC's. The Mamba Max has a built in USB port so it has no need for the extra programming kit. If you didn't already buy a Castle Link Programmer, and BEC, I can sell you one programed at 6 volts. If you have the BEC already, you'll have to buy a Castle Link programmer seperate unless you already did.

I wasn't sure if you were thinking the USB cable that comes with the Mamba Max is the same as the Castle Link programmer, because its not. Your question about is it done through the ESC when you link it up is what through me off, because the Castle Link programmer doesn't connect to the Mamba Max ESC. So either you didn't realize that you didn't need a Castle Link for the mamba, or you were thinking that the mamba came with a castle link, I'm not sure which.

I don't like hijacking this guy's thread, which was supposed to be about the Novak Goat drag brake, so please PM me and I'll be glad to help you with any issues you may have.

Thats cool Charlie. I've got no response from at least 3 guys her that have had them, so that really does answer my question just fine........
BUT. If I set the ESC up to the BRUSHED drag brake setting, being a sensored motor will it even recognise the setting or will it just bail out to DEFAULT?
P.S. Charlie, over here the goat is a $400 system, so I would be asking more than $160.
BLOODY AUSSIES........
