Hello all. I've been reading this forum for a couple of days and have seen people talking about good and bad mesh between gears. I know exactly what you mean by this but does anybody have any tips on getting the mesh spot on. I've read somewhere about using a strip of paper.. is this right???

Evertime I try the paper thing, it ends up to tight. Maybe I need thicker paper. Now I just do it by feel. Basically, I adjust until I get about 1mm spur movement(rocking back and forth) when holding the CB.

1 mm seems like WAY to much to me. Almost double or triple the amount I would recommend.
Until you get the feel of doing it, my suggestion is to use a post-it note. Everyone has them and they are the perfect thickness.

Once you get it set make sure everything turns freely. A lot of spur gears are warped the first time you use them so be sure there isn't any binding. Make a run or two and check it again and adjust it if needed.

If its to tight you will hear an unmistakable wining noise. I can't describe it but most people will know exactly what it is if they hear it.

I have had very good results with a strip of paper. If the mesh is too tight you will feel it bind. If it is too loose you will feel it "click". When it is just right it will spin smoothly.

Did I mention I'm not very good at ballparking measurements?

Basically, if holding the CB stationary, you can move the spur and feel a little slop in the gears.

I have a problem telling the difference between 4" and 12".
I just say 12 if I'm asked.

Likewise, 12. They didn't believe me when I used to say 14.

My trick for setting the mesh is to use the thick plastic bag the gear came in. Cut a strip of it a little less than 1/2 wide, and about 2" long. put it between the spur and clutch bell, close them tight, tighten everything down and then pull the plastic strip out.
