i have a savage that i got for christmas and i have just broke it in but not tuned it and sometimes the gears will spin but the wheels wont and i have to turn it off and then back on i dont know why this is happening please help!

1. Check your spur gear, see if it is melted or stripped.
2. Check the tightness of your spur gear, tighten the nut down all the way, the back it out 1/4 of a turn

might need to replace the pad on the spur gear and scuff up the plate a bit with some sand paper.
sounds kinda like the pads glazed

my spur gear is not stripped or melted and where are the pads located, are they those red things on the bottom

check your front and rear diff gears sometimes they will break a tooth off and it will slip i had that happen

Which savage do you have?

The reason I ask is because this just happened to me today. Except mine isn't nearly new and it's a 3-speed trans. I'll be tearing it apart shortly to try and figure out what the issue is. Mine not only doesn't engage into gear, it won't roll forward. It did for a little bit, but now it's stuck again. Will post up my results if it seems relevant to your issue.

EDIT:
Your problem is more than likely not the same as my problem...

I hope your diffs don't look like mine did.....

Olds.....your Savy is down? Sucks. I sold one of my LRP .28s to a guy here on the island and now he has blown out both diffs....I am scared for mine with the LRP .30. May have to upgrade to the bulletproof ones.
Steven...so you are saying your spur gear is turning your transmission but the power is not getting to the wheels? So spin the spur gear…counter clockwise and see if the outputs out of the transmission are turning. Follow the drive shafts to the front and rear diffs. Make sure the diffs are turning. Spin the diffs by the wheels…..spin one tire the other should turn the opposite direction. If that is smooth then the internal spider gears “should” still be good. But could still be the ring and pinion gears.

Hey, olds

How much of a difference did you notice with the three speed transmission on the savage x? I'm wanting to get the three speed but not sure how much better it is or if it's a pain in the butt to put in...sorry for changing the subject

It's not worth it IMO. Too much adjusting for the 1-2 mph of top speed you gain. The accelration is a bit better for sure. I'd stick with a 2-speed for the simple fact that if you change the gearing or tire size, you only have one shift point to tune in. I built and installed a 3 speed for a guy's Savage X. I honestly was not impressed. The weight you gain in the drivetrain is counter productive. Adding weight and more moving parts to the drive train is a sure fire way to reduce power to the ground. Add pulling the gear cluster 10 times to adjust the shift point....no thank you!
I'd buy a stronger engine with a matching pipe, hands down the best way to get more speed/acceleration without compromise.

Mine came with it, but I have run a two speed in my rig before. For reasons mentioned by scrogg. I ran a two speed last winter because it's easier to adjust. The 3 speed is cool to have if you have a weaker engine as it starts lower but goes a bit higher than a typical two speed. So with a weaker engine, the three gears helps spread the power out better through the RPM range.

Since I run an LRP28S3 in the summer... two speeds would be plenty. But hearing it shift twice is kind of cool. ;)

I added reverse and a 3 speed to my Savage. Then I added the higher ratio 3rd gear and an alloy case.
I didn't notice any adverse effect with the added weight. No sag at all in the shelf. :D
