So, i bought a beater truck. Its a 92 chevy 2500 series. 400 bucks, and it has a ladder rack on it. I'm not going to post pics, since its uglier than hell. I plan on running it to home depot and back while i'm remodeling my house. Here's the deal: It had a bad starter on it. They guy who owned it is allowing it to sit in his driveway until I get the starter on. (yes, i know it runs.. i work with him and he used to drive it in on occasion.) I bought a new starter for 45 bucks. It included shims, i guess for certain vehicles the starter fits. I was wondering of anyone knows if they are needed on this truck? If not, I'm seeing the guy tomorrow, but I figured he many not remember.

If the starter is still in it, you'll see the shims when you take it out. If it's already out and you install it without shims, you'll hear it hit the flywheel on the way in to start or you'll feel the strain when it's spinning. If that's the case, just loosen it up, slide a shim in and try again. If you keep the dome light on, you'll see it dim way down if the starter is too tight.

Well he had taken it out for me one day out of boredom, so I'm not sure because of that. However, I can try like you said and see what happens. Thanks

You can also look for a mark where the starter bolts on. A lot of times it will leave a 'print' of the shim or the entire base of the starter.
