I have been running 30% nitro fuel in my savage xl but was told to drop down to 20% because it will help my engine run cooler.I was running 30% sidewinder but my temp never went over 260to 265 .No 8 glow plug.Also any other tuning tips I need to know to make the switch.Air filter is also cleaned reg.This is my first Nitro rc I have ever try to tune,so any tuning tips would be greatly appriciated.I have also not touch the LSN but truck boggs a little off the start but then accelerate awsome.I also just bought 20% Trinity fuel as my local rc hobby store is 342 km away.Thanks eh.

if your gonna switch fuel i wouldrecommend seting your needles back to factory settings and start the tuning process over again.

always make sure theres a trail of smoke coming out of the exhaust when your at wot.
 
30% is just typically a waste of $ for a basher. If your engine is running good, then it shouldn't hurt anything. Although, higher nitro typically has less oil in it so it's less forgiving to a newbie.

As for your bog, sounds like it may be rich on the LSN. Nitro engines tend to "load up" when sitting and idling. But, they should accelerate cleanly after you drive it, get it up to temp, run a few high speed passes, then if you let it sit and idle for 5-10 seconds, it should take off pretty smoothly. If it blubbers, it's a bit rich on the LSN (low speed needle).
 
i too am new to the RC world and have purchased the savage XL.... broke mine in using sidewinder 30% and am still running 30% using an R5 plug... running temp anywhere from 230-260... runs good, hits third gear no problem... only thing i can't get it to do is wheelie-on-command.. oh well, it still smokes my buddies savage X... still trying to figure out a running temp that is "right" considering the 5.9 will run hotter cause its larger then all others no???
 
Just wondering if I go counter clockwise to set my needles back to factory settings,can I over tighten HSN&LSN.Should I also change my glow plug back to no5 from the no8 for temp wise.I also can't get my to wheelie also.Thanks olds97_lss LSN was a bit rich.What is the difference between 30% and 20% fuel(temp,power???)Thanks.

Counter-clockwise is loosening the needles, so no. They should fall out, not overtighten.
30% fuel and 20% fuel have the same oil content unless the manufactuer specify a different blend.
Temps can be higher with 30% due to the increased nitro %, which causes an engine to run warmer. You actually are getting more lubrication running 30% vs. 20% due to richer needle settings. You always will run richer needle settings with 30% than you have to with 20%. It is a myth that your engine will last longer running 20%. I have had several engine modders tell me that big blocks last longer with 30% due to the richer settings required for proper operation.
Power difference is very mild, sometimes insignificant between 20-30% in the same engine. Compression ratios come into play and I am not going there as this post is getting too long already.
Your plug should be fine. I suggest you run longer plugs like McCoy 59 plugs.
O.S. plugs are short and do not reach down into the combustion chamber properly on
the HPI engines. This slightly reduces compression. It is not going to hurt the engine though, so you can continue to run the ones you have. The Trinity 20% will be great for that engine.
Wheelies come from a good tune, mainly setting the LSN properly. Make small adjustments after the engine is good and warm.
