No, you don't HAVE to, but it makes a difference. I tune a lot of engines at the local track, and I started wondering why the other 2.5s were running better than mine. Quicker starts, and higher RPMs. One of the guys I tuned gave me a couple of tanks of Traxxas Top Fuel to try, instead of the Blue Thunder I always preferred. I re-tweeked, and that's all I run now.
Their fuel is specifically formulated for their engines.
You'll get some other opinions on this, everyone has their fuel of choice.

no, well i don't. i'm sure it is fine to use what ever is convenient for you. i think that traxxas reccomends 10-20 percent thouse for their 2.5.

I use the traxxas stuff some times but not always. if u dont like it, traxxas's has come out with a 33% nitro that is specialy formulated for the trx2.5 and the trx2.5r engines. more punch with 33%

No u don't have to. But every engine runs differently when using different manufactures fuel. Also depends on the temp & local.

But like Rolex said, you'll have many different opinions in this catagory.

To add to this question, if I break in and go through a gallon or two of one type of fuel that is 20% nitro, can I switch to another brand of 20% nitro, and back again? Or should we all just be sticking to the same type of fuel our engine started with? I'm not even sure what else is available in my area, but looks like Top Fuel is not all that common here.

You might need to re-tweek if you change fuels, but the only time you have to go through another partial break in is when you change your nitro content.

My opinion on this is based off experience on different fuels.

I have used Top fuel 20%, Trinity MHP20%, Blue Thunder 20 % HPI Power Fuel 20%

Honestly I think the Top Fuel has a bit of an advantage due to the different type of oil they use. Now the HPI power Fuel 20% has got my vote only for the fact there is more oil in their fuel which in turn helps create more compression thus more power.

The rest I stated are all great fuel choices. Opinions vary but theres is mine.

Now I use Odonells. Great fuel. Never tried it on my Tmaxx though just on my Buggies.

I never got a chance to use a Traxxas engine in my Maxx. I had an OS .15 CV-RX with O'Donnell 20%. It ran awesome.

As Rolex mentioned you might find your self tweaking your needles if you switch between different brands of the same nitro content. Setting them back to factory settings will help you with this process.
