Speaking of linking images: Please do not hotlink to other sites, this can be viewed as bandwidth theft by another site admin. This would not be good for our site. Contact me or someone else if you don't have a host to upload to.

I agree, I have noticed that alot of people do that. Just think if we are using alot of bandwidth we are then also using alot of other peoples bandwidth by linking photo's from other sites.

They can look at there logs and see this.

Ohhh yeah, the babe thread died as a very large deal of those photos where from the image gallery, most all being over a meg and larger in size and the thread had 4,000 views - thats death in bandwidth language.

Feel free to start another one, but do not post images from the gallery, link it instead.

Here's a little example of bandwidth:

The overall stats for my site, please note the total bandwidth useage for Janurary.
webuse1.jpg

Here's the monthly breakdown for Janurary. Note the total hits, Kb, and Kb per day.
webuse2.jpg

Here's the daily stats for the month of January:

And here's the suprising part, 29 Gb of the total is from ONE file being viewed.

This video is posted (by my permission) on 3 sites; RCNT, beatyour truck, and Frequency. All the other content makes up for only 5.9% of the bandwidth. Sigs, pix, other vids. I have also found that there are other "non-sanctioned" hotlinks on other sites to the sandbox vid. I had to do alot of digging to find them but there are a few (one is in Quatar middle east). Also note the number 2 file in the last pic, that's the sig I'm using right now. Every time you see it in a thread, I get a hit and it uses up some of my bandwidth. No bigie to me, I kind of like the sig. But that's what is happening to RCNT when a sig is hosted on the RCNT gallery, same with the pix.

I hope this clears up any questions about bandwidth and how it's used.

Just a little FYI in regards to the update I posted above.

I have setup Google's AdSense as many other admins have recommended me into doing so, Google pays per click. Which is located at the VERY bottom of the forum as to not be annoying to anyone. So no one has to buy or spend anything to support RCNT, all they have to do is click once or twice while your visiting the site.

Thanks,

-Michael

i clicked on the Gamestop advertisement 6 times. lol. :winnar: :smart:

Nice try but you need to go farther down the page.
The game stop add will only pay if you purchase from them after you click on the banner.

Try again:bling:

nitromaniac - Thanks for posting those links!

Max Trooper - Thanks the clicks, that helps a bunch. In fact we've made $1.40 so far from all the clicks. This might just be a decent way to bring in a few extra dollars.

The Links at the bottom of the page are really un obtrusive. If we all click a few times every-time we visit, we could generate some bucks...

I regularly visit about 10 sites a day, spreading spam like avian flu. I can tell you most sites have some kind of limit, like no gallery (pics hosted elsewhere only), small sigs, register only, something. Big sites like rc universe are so loaded with ads that it is slow to upload, and it is just annoying. RCNT is my favorite site, with the best combo of users and user-friendly access.

Here are two suggestions.

1. Create a manufacturer's forum, and charge them a small fee to spam thier brains out. RC Solutions and RAM tech for example, get a hell of a lot of great exposure and free press here at RCNT. Any amount from $20 to 50 a month would be a bargain for a company, and just a few could cover the bills. RC Solutions spends $150 a month for a 750 x 150 rotating banner on one rc site! I try to keep a low profile spam wise (I don't say RC Solutions in my sig for example) so hopefully I can enter general discussions without everyone rolling their eyes and thinking here comes the rc sol shill again. Woodie made me an rcnt affiliate a while back and put up a rc sol banner for free, and I actually asked him to take it down. I would rather have a dedicated forum for advertising, so that viewers can go there on purpose to get spammed, rather than drown in it like rcuniverse. RC revolution has a good example of a manufacturers forum, but they are a site that requires you to register to view.

2. Limit pic size in a post to 20k or less, and gallery images to 640x480. Other sites make no bones about not hosting pics at all, so it is not unreasonable to have a limit on file size.

RCNT is a victim of its own success! There are worse problems to have.

Good thing your smart, cuz U sure is ugly!
You made some good points and have some great suggestions.
Thanks Scottm

Ummm Well, I guess we aren't the only ones with issues.

I'm not sure if I understand this.
Hot linking uses up his bandwidth so he adds a graphic to tell us this. This is one smart Admin :hammer:

Its happening all over. My second favorite site (Savage) is starting to have problems as well. Even though I sponsor with advertising on several sites, I come here every day to learn how to run my toys. You guys can hear a movie and tell how lean my engine is. Can't get that anywhere else.

Some of the other guys sell stuff on their forums, why not get some of that going. Talk to Tower and see if they will sell you some goods at a discount, like T-Maxxes, Savages or cars, etc. A few big ticket items a week will pay for the site fast.

scottm - You make some very good points, in fact a few of them Eddy and I pretty much hammered out lastnight on the phone. I've also considered a "Spammers Forum" I mean manufacturer's forum :D Something to act kind of like a mini sponsor, and even allow 1-2 people from that manufacture become a mod of their own forum - this way the manufacture gets what it wants and I nor the RCNT Staff loses it's control over the rest of the forum. Just a nice happy medium!

As far as the image gallery goes, I'll be making a formal announcement about updated rules and so on in terms of the gallery soon.

msly - I'm actually very happy to hear that you find the ads "un obtrusive" that's exactly what I want. As scottm has pointed out and many of us already know, a lot of sites anymore are flooded with so many ads you don't know whats the site and whats the ads. The google ads have been placed in two places 1. the front page on the left hand side - again below everything else. 2. Below the forum. These are the only two places I'll be adding Google ads too.

RAMTech-RC - This has been brought up more then once and even long ago, though it's something I don't think I'm ready to get into yet.

Alright as promised I have weeded out all the pics I absolutely can't live without, shaved my gallery down from 4 pages to 1 and even those will go at some point.

Please don't remove all the pix from your galleries. This was one of the things abou rcnt that made me stay in my early days. Seeing everyones rides. the contientious users here (you guys replying most often in this thread) have the right idea, but maybe not the right approach. Someone stated (probably WoodiE and a few others) that if you make your pix 640x480 and compress them enough, the file size per pic can be quite low (20Kb to ~50Kb). This isn't much of a hit to BW if it's in the gallery. Post them, this is how new people get interested and inspired. Not to mention that it's a plus that we have that other boards don't offer.

If you really feel the need, post only the best of your pix and put a gallery page on your host with more. It's not hard and will help RCNT out with the BW issue, and promote the hobby. Put a watermark tag in your pix that you post in the gallery with your website url, or put the url to your gallery in the pic description in the RCNT gallery.
