As much as I love hte little smiles and what not....ban them....with everyone using them in their signatures and 100000 posts that has to put some dent in the amount...maybe i just suck...I feal like a hypocrit now because I've got a .gif signature maybe i should delete it...

Great post Lykan, alot of what I tried to say but when I am passionate about something sometimes a little of my frustration/anger comes out. Well said indeed.

I am certainly willing to host sigs for free. With the understanding that my host can go down at times... in other words no complaints LOL.... certainly you can email me it its down....

ye aguys but remember the "Long Live the Babe thread" there are a lot of pic in there.. but we have to keep that. can't get rid of it. :D

The issue is pics that are hosted on this site in the gallery. When people host their own pics such as in the babe thread it costs RCNT very little in bandwidth.

We aren't short on storage just the amount of data put on and taken off the server daily.

Almost two years and we have outgrown our server? Now that is huge. This site is great and will remain so.

If the gallery accounts for more than half the bandwidth, time for the gallery to be under construction until a PERMANENT solution can be generated.

I took momentary offense at HB's post about the mooch list. I for one practically live on this site. I have contributed in more than financial ways. Those of us that are knowledgeable contribute to this site everytime we help someone. Those that are seeking that help often thank us and bring their friends.

I concur with WoodiE. Altering this site will have negative impacts that are beyond what are easily seen. The best and only solution is to cut bandwidth until a permanent home can be created. If that means to close the gallery temporarily, then do so. A dedicated server is a great idea. So, how do we finance it?

Charging members is an obvious answer, but the wrong answer. Sponsorship is perhaps the best way to go. Everyone wins, but it has to be done in such a manner as to not annoy the members (ie no freaking pop-up/unders). I for one will speak with my family (major marketing background and grant writing knowledge) and see if they can help me properly approach the RC manufacturers out there for potential sponsorship. At least I will do so, if WoodiE desires it.

Members who choose to donate are doing just that, donating. Members who do not by choice or because they can not afford to do so should not be belittled or punished. Why? Because that methodology always backfires.

Eddy, had the best idea of all...time to brainstorm. If we can collectively help out a huge portion of the RC world, then we should be able to come up with a solution that keeps this site where it belongs...in the number one RC site on the web spot.

Not just the manufactures, but also the dealers. Not the small LHS, but the big boys such as Tower Hobbies. I don't know how many times I have seen links to Towers site more various items. I know I have ordered several items from them based on the info I got here.

Just a thought.

OK here is my view of this matter.. I think this is the NUMBER ONE site out!! I have learned almost everything on this website. I think that this website has a lot to offer and I agree with NA on the fact that with better advertising this problem we are having will go away. I have now left only FOUR pics in my gallery to help out. If there is anything that the members can do we should have a newsletter posted so we can help out. ADVERTISE!!! ADVERTISE!!!

Why would you take offense if you contribute? I was never implying in anyway for the site to have a maditory pay. I was just talking smack to the people that didn't feel the need to help the site the we gain so much from in times of troubled water. Like I said before when I am passionate about a subject I can be harsh and maybe my point isn't clear as to my true feelings, but I feel like I speak the truth. I do agree its a bad idea to make people pay, I am smart I can see that would be the worst thing you could do to the site as people would never come. I still don't see why you would take offense Sky, even if just for a molment.

Bandwidth is data transmitted, period. Pix in the gallery eat up storage, and bandwidth IF the pix are viewed. Yes, taking old pix offline will cut bandwidth by limiting a viewers options. Lykan summed it up best by suggesting that posted pix be smaller in size and file size. This helps immensly. Just about all of my pix in the gallery are 640x480 and somewhere around 25Kb each. alot of the pix are not as web friendly. Not everyone has the skills or tools to crunch down the files and some of the pix are big.

Msly has suggested that those of us that have hosting plans offer to host sigs for members that don't. I too am willing to offer the same thing, and I do it for a few people right now. I will also talk to WoodiE about another solution for the Gallery in general.

And as for the babe thread and the pix in it, some are hosted on the RCNT server (look for the rcnt tag in the lower right hand corner).

Because stating that I had would fire you up...sometimes the target is just to big to pass up.
=devil

The bottom line is that we need to pool our resources (brain power is huge on this site) and come up with a workable solution.

Advertising isn't the issue here, Money to purchase band width is.
Advertisers will come and go, the fees it take to operate this site will only grow.

I believe we are one of the largest if not the largest member supported RC forums. This is one of the reasons it works so well. When a forum gets Sponsorships, The sponsor has the right to dictate the rules to a certain extent. "WHAT IF" Company XYZ is paying the bills here. If someone has an issue with XYZ and expresses it? Guess what, If we want XYZs support and they ask up to pull the thread we would have 2 choices. Pull it and be the companies whore or keep it up and loose funding. This would give the site almost no time to come up with the money for hosting or find a new sponsor. It could very well be the death of the forum.

The only way to do this is by adding Value Added Paid Services for those that want it and don't mind paying to support the site.

A few of these services could be:
Photo Gallery
Web hosting
Fee Based For Sale Forum.

IMO, The Info, content, Sharing of knowledge and community should always be free, anything more a user wants should be fee based.

I went to the Museum the other day. Entrance was free as it should be. I wanted to know more about what I was seeing so I rented a set of headphone for the tour. I also purchased a program book to take home. These additional items enhanced my experience and I had no issues paying for them. Did everyone have to do the same, No, Did they still benefit from the experience, Yes.

Behind the seines there are people that donate there time to the museum and others donate money as well. I don't see why we can't do the same.

Great idea, Eddy. I knew there was a reason I liked you. Now, we need to make it happen. Where's WoodiE when you need him?

BTW, sponsorship can be gained without giving away control. It is all in the way the sponsor is pitched the idea.
