  1. Bashing
stripped down the whole of my used savage last night, including engine and clutch bell,

here's what i found wrong:angry:

1. Chipped to hell metal spur gear
2. Clutch teeth pretty much melted off
3. Clutch shoes melted and springs fell off (well 1 anyway)
4. Cracked piston
5. Scratched to hell piston sleeve

i'm guessing all of these things added up together are why the savage was running like a bag of sh*t when it arrived at my door, so much for the "running as sweet as a nut" quote huh?:\

So anyone buying used make sure you ask even more questions than what i did, and remember that you MAY have to spend a bit more after buying used to get the truck running as you want it too.:\

Anytips on rebuilding the savage would be helpful:hehe:

And do you have to break engine in again after replacing piston and sleeve?

Thanks for looking

With that list I can't imagine it ran at all.

Anyway, just work on replacing the broken stuff. I'm a fan of the stock plastic spur so I'd go back to that. I'd rather have that shred if somethings wrong. If not you could toast the tranny, or probably as in your case, the clutch. So, new spur. New clutch bell. New clutch shoes. New clutch springs. New piston/sleeve. Sounds like the total.

And yes, you need to break in the new piston and sleeve once installed. Just like if it was a new engine.

wow, quick reply, yeah going back stock spur gear, get the meshing right then surely will be just as good as metal????????

what about clutch bell??

would you go vented to keep the temp of bell down a little?

As long as the drivetrain is running free and there's no binding, a plastic spur will be fine as long as the mesh is right. I use the paper method. Just take a thin strip of notebook paper or printer paper and put it between the gears. Slide the engine over so it presses the paper into the spur and CB teeth. Tighten the engine mounts. Then rotate the spur to remove the paper. You'll find a tiny bit of play, but no binding. That should give you a rock-solid mesh.

I've never used a vented bell, but I can't see where it would hurt. Just as long as the shoes and springs are right it should be fine. When you take apart the one you have, check the bearings to make sure they're ok. Sounds like the clutch got really hot and I'd just make sure they're rolling ok and not about to fall apart.

didn't even think of what may have caused the problem, they were metal clutch shoes too:\

will give that a check 2mro too

any more advice for a savage noobie?

with that list, and not posted in his ebay add, id file a complaint with paypal, get some money back . PAYPAL LOGIN -----> RESOLUTION CENTER----> FILE CLAIM i beleive is the way to do it.

first thing to do is print out this auction so you have a hardcopy UGH never thought i would say that ;)

then i would suggest like you already did filing the claim,

then try either to work it out with the other side or let paypal take the upper hand, as paypal usually holds to the right person, in your case if you stated it the right way, i would think that they have a solution for you within the next cpl days.

the next step, Add his username here or the auction number so other ppl on this community don't get ripped like you in the future , just an option :)

if everything runs well you ll have your money back within the next 2 weeks.

i ve only had to use the claim system once and they worked real well, i called them in the middle of the pending time and they kept me posted on all responses of my oponent.

good luck

this is the item link ;) so all ppl see it just copy and paste...

i can't help you much with the savage itself since I'm kinda in the same boat, fixing my ebay savage up this month.

but good luck to you

With an engine that is in that sad of shape, I'd consider getting a new engine and pitching this one. It obviously wasn't well taken care of. So, you could spend a decent chunk of change rebuilding it and possibly still having a bearing fail or something on you or just get a new one.

You may have to heat it a bit and wiggle/twist the carb as gently as you can. Also, depending on the cinch bolt, backing the bolt out a few turns then tapping on the bolt will push half the cinch out and disengage it from the carb neck.

When buying used, I buy and price based on the chassis and whats with it. I rarely expect the engine to be worth anything as they usually aren't.

thanks for all the help and suggestions on this one, have filed a claim like previously said, and thankfully got enough money back to be able to do all the repairs necersary, look forward to receiving new parts in the post, and getting the savvy running the way it should!!!!!
