One again Big Brother (Microsoft) just made an annoucment today about another huge flaw in Windows 2000 and above. Thankfully they accounced this today. I am working on a new image that we are going to be installing on our XP machines toward the end of this week.

For those who want to read the story go here.

For those who just want the patch go here.

This patch is not currently available on Windows Update. :-/

There certainly has to be a better way. I know there are ways to push down all updates to computers on the network. I have 10 servers and 600+ computers under my wing here and form me to apply the patch on all would be a BiOtch. I probably have about 12 different images for all my computers. What solution do you use to apply patches??

sLY

I have VNC installed on all of my PC's. So the only thing I need is for the machine to be on and I could apply the necessary patches. So I will have a branch keep the machines on after close and do the necessary work. Most of the computers that are off site are still Windows 98. 95% of our XP machines are here at Main.

Someone could make a killing if they were to make a piece of software that would allow you to select the patches you want to install and push them out to be installed on the client side. I hate the fact that I have to touch each machine and download the same file over and over and over. :(

I know Microsoft makes a server that can do that...the name slips me at the moment. I only manage server remotely using pcanywhere. i do make reg changes and tweak services remotely but thats it. we are running 80% Win2k 10% WIn98Se and the other 10%XP

Speaking of images...nothing is more scary then realizing you have a problem with an image an its on 600 computers LOL that could F your day up big time LOL

Yeah. That is why I go through my new image with a fine tooth comb. Then I will make an image of it and throw it on the floor. Sort of like a test drive. :) That way I can squish as many bugs as possible.

All of our staff and public machines run either Windows 98 or XP. We also have 15 machines that were given to us via the Gates Foundation along with a PDC. There might be one or two floating around that still run 95. On the server end it is strictly FreeBSD. We also have a few server running some flavor of Linux. The only server we have that is MS based is the NT 4.0 server that goes with those 15 machines.

Microsoft, which learned about the flaws more than six months ago from researchers, said the only protective solution was to apply a repairing patch it offered on its Web site. It assessed the threat to computer users as "critical," its highest rating.

I love MS. I guess they're waiting till it becomes a real problem instead of an experimental lab problem.
