I'm taking out my optidrive because it keeps screwing up, so I need to put in a fail safe. What would be a good one that's not terribly expensive?

The other thing I've been finding is that some systems don't work with spread spectrum systems. I have the Traxxas 2.4ghz system, is it a spread spectrum?

You're saying that the rx has a fail safe built in?

The OptiDrive does act as a fail safe in low battery and loss of signal situations

From the 5309 Revo Manual:

Your Revo is equipped with the TQ 2.4GHz radio system. The TQ 2.4GHz is a 3-channel system that provides control for up to three outputs. Revo is equipped with two hightorque
steering servos connected via dual Channel 1 outputs. The TQ 2.4GHz works in conjunction with the OptiDrive® Electronic Shift Module to monitor and control the
input and output signals for the throttle and shifting servos (channels). The OptiDrive monitors the voltage of the on-board RX Power Pack. The “Function” LED will flash red if
the battery voltage is too low. The 2.4GHz 4-channel receiver is also equipped with low-voltage detection and will enter fail-safe mode if battery voltage drops too low.

The Opti-Drive is NOT a fail safe. It just has a low voltage detection. The TQ Radio has a built in low voltage fail safe.

i have the newer TQ2.4...and if i remove the optidrive , i loose ALL failsafe features .....so i left it in the truck ....and if i put in another failsafe in place of the optidrive , it will work...but not like it should ....i can't program it ...it will just take the throttle back to neutral

( i have a duratrax failsafe and couple others chinese ones ..they all do the same )

Raiden101,
If i am not mistaken traxxas has built in fail safe...

I thought i read in the TX/RX manual that it had fail safe,
I see hamz posted up the exact manual i was reading.
so if i am understanding this complete post
w/ the 2.4g traxxas radio it has failsafe but does not work right if you remove the opti-drive?( i know opti drive is for the reverse so you dont shift into rev while truck is rolling foward or vise-versa)
I dont mean to jack the thread but was looking at the traxxas 2.4g radio systom for my sons truck, and with him failsafe is a MUST..

thats what it did to me ...with no optidrive in my revo , i have no failsafe features at all .....so i put back the optidrive in and all is good ....my other revo has no reverse , so i put the programmable duratrax failsafe in ... it wont program like i want it ...but the intergrated failsafe in the RX will work when hooked up to it .....both my traxxas radios do the same thing

Well, my truck sticks at WOT and I can't touch it until I change the throttle trim, or until it decides it's ok to slow down. So far, it's worst crash was into a low hanging tree branch, so it didn't hurt anything, but I can't figure out what's wrong with it

Just my 2 cents ... but today i had an issue with my throttle not working... turns out it was low battery... truck wouldnt throttle at all... i didnt check any of the other signals i just shut it down but if low battery = loss of signal , i think the throttle possition is perfect...
